"If we can learn to see every person as a ‘fellow sufferer’, and thus extend our compassion without discrimination, then there are, even in these hard times, genuine grounds for hope."
A new biography shows how Schopenhauer’s philosophy of universal suffering might offer surprising grounds for hope.

This is a wonderfully thoughtful book review by Stroud. Well worth taking the time to read the review. David Bather Woods' biography is going to be put on my reading list through interlibrary loan tomorrow.

Loving today's news that the mysterious "fedora man" outside the Louvre heist was actually a 15-year-old museum visitor who dresses like a 1940s French detective all the time, just because. apnews.com/article/louv...

This is an interesting idea. I hope it comes to pass. We need new thinking and new ways of doing things.

Sometimes we forget what's important: To help the broken heal, sometimes just by being a listening presence. In a broken world, more than ever, we need a return to wholeness.

From the Tao Te Ching, Chapter 17: "When the Master [Leader] governs, the people are hardly aware that he exists. Next best is a leader who is loved. Next, one who is feared. The worst is one who is despised."

We live in a time when our leader is the worst.

Not the first article I've read about this. The interesting part is that many of the people having developed psychosis have no prior history of mental illness. This phenomenon is something new.

The ‘dog days’ of summer get their name due to their association with the Dog Star, Sirius, found in the constellation Canis Major.

The first visible rising of Sirius occurs during the hot stretch from early July to early September.

Woof.

This is a damn good article. Well worth the time to read.

“When you make a moral decision, there are always costs.” -Pauline Shanks Kaurin.
Seven years ago, Pauline Shanks Kaurin left a good job as a tenured professor, uprooted her family, and moved to teach military ethics at the Naval War College. Now she's leaving in protest of policies she can't support and that make her job impossible.

The bridge is lined with many gorgeous sculptures of men and women and children, most of which are in the kind of poses that show the sculptor was a fantastic observer of real people—holding hands, carrying children, leaning against each other, all just stunning work.

Then there’s this guy.
