We forget art isn’t just drawing your favourite character or drawing something with meaning, you can quite literally draw anything you want, colour in things, make clay figures, do something with yarn for the fun of it. Evrything is art (-ai cuz wtf)

In January, the Board caved and rescinded the invitation. 180 writers withdrew in protest, and the Festival collapsed. As this process unfolded, three board members resigned, followed by the Chair. The remaining members cancelled the festival in its entirety and also resigned. They did not try to reverse course and save the festival, they simply fled. As Adler has noted, this is an act of extreme cultural vandalism. Last year, she presided over a festival that saw record-breaking attendance of over 160,000 people. This is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious festival in the country. At any point, they could have admitted to making an error and saved it by allowing Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah to participate—instead, they destroyed it. This is instructive: we know that there was no fidelity to the Festival, or the majority of its stakeholders, and as such there is precisely no way of characterising this as good governance. It is in fact rather implacably malevolent and incompetent. The Adelaide Festival 2025 Impact Report—which includes Writers' Week—showed the festival generated $62.6 million in economic value to the state, with Writers' Week 2025 drawing a record-breaking 160,000 attendees The Unhinged Racism of the Zionist West We are seeing these acts of cultural vandalism with far too much regularity, as the 20 other high profile cases of racist intervention in the arts show—we desperately need urgent reform in arts governance. This model is broken. Board members do not face consequences for their egregiously bad decisions, and this must change, too. While announcing the festival’s cancellation, the Board issued a terrible non-apology. "We apologise to Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah for how this decision was represented and reiterate this is not about identity or dissent, but rather a continuing rapid shift in the national discourse around the breadth of freedom of expression in our nation following Australia’s worst terror attack in history.” Once again, this ties Randa to a terror attack she has nothing to do with, and is entirely unrelated to the cause of Palestinian liberation. What’s more, the statement is wrong in its description of “Australia’s worst” terror attack. The shooting in Bondi claimed 15 Australian lives; the Bali bombings claimed 88; the Port Arthur massacre claimed 35 lives, and prior to that, settlers in Australia carried out numerous terroristic massacres that regularly had much higher death tolls. Here, it is forbidden to discuss Palestinians through anything other than the lens of terrorism, so as to fold them into the War-on-Terror rhetorical framework, in large part because “war crime” holds precisely zero weight in the imperial core. Prosecution for war crimes in the West is practically non-existent. The last element of this rhetorical strategy is that you must characterise it as the worst possible example of a such thing to occur, if not ever, then certainly since the last worst possible Western-centred thing, and in the most emotional manner possible. Primarily, in this context, the most cited link is the Holocaust, but other ways include sensationalist and racist lies describing various atrocities like the infamous “40 beheaded babies” hoax, which soon fell apart, but lean heavily on an Orientalist framework of the barbaric Indigenous savage who must be as-savagely opposed. That sensationalism is itself a projection, a promise of intent, and we’ve seen that play out. Now, in lieu of the constantly debunked hoaxes, we see it in increasingly hysterical analogies like the latest effort from Netanyahu saying that 1,000 Israelis dying on October 7th is "equivalent to about 40,000 Americans" in an attempt to scale-up the perception of the attack.
