I think originally they use this term in jp side might be like farewell party to let livers and fans have some last time memories.

But like you said, it's getting to the point people usually feel the need to be suspicious about every detail and reason for their leaving

Totally agree
It's sad and I understand fans need time to grieve. But if people cant fully understand graduation = quit their current job and go for another one or another persona, then I don't think it's fine to use that term.
