This is a vital part of any thriving democracy, and transparency in state records and investigation files is one way to ensure that the people are protected against the overreach of the state.

Transparency and disclosure is one way to restore that faith, but it's also another way to ensure that the people are protected from the abuses, potential overreach, and mistakes of local government and elected officials.

Transparency and disclosure are vital for restoring faith in democracy, especially in a moment when Americans right now are very unsure about the state of our democracy and faith in our democratic institutions are at their lowest in decades.

We want to make sure that law enforcement and local government are doing right by people who lose their lives under circumstances that are not clear.

But they should. And the reason is that in a democracy we want to be able to allow the people to make sure that local officials are doing their due diligence and doing right by people who die under mysterious and untimely circumstances.

What this essentially means is that local residents—people in the state of Mississippi and the nation as a whole—really won't be able to see the official records by the death investigator or the medical examiner.

Many may not know that in the state of Mississippi, local death investigators and officials are under no obligation to publicly disclose the results of their investigation into a mysterious or untimely death.

Because of that, it's unlikely there will be a secondary autopsy in his case. But both of these cases, I believe, expose weaknesses and flaws in our democracy that I think we should be thinking about in this current political moment.

The case of Cory Zukatis is going to be a little bit more complicated. This was a 36-year-old white man who was unhoused, and with unhoused people, it's very difficult to get next of kin to represent them and potentially challenge the findings of local investigators and law enforcement.

The family of Reed, who is being represented by Benjamin Crump, are already working on an independent autopsy after local law enforcement were quick to rule out foul play in less than 24 hours after finding Trey dead.

Trey Reed and Cory Zukatis were both found dead hanging from trees in the state of Mississippi yesterday. Major media has been slow to cover this story, but more details have come out today.

What we really need here in Los Angeles County are very basic things—investment into housing, investment into healthcare, investment into mental health services. These are the conditions that prevent people from going to jail in the first place.

Attorney General of California Rob Bonta announced a law suit against LA County and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department for violating the civil rights of people in jail.

It’s no secret the jails in LA are the most dangerous in the United States. Just this year alone, there have been 36 deaths in 35 weeks, setting a record for the number of people who have died here in LA County jails during the month of September.
