Interested in what it's like to work with Theatre Centre as an actor? Here Milo McCarthy talks about their experience on the tour of Birds and Bees by Charlie Josephine back in 2023, what it was like as one of their first jobs out of drama school, and what that has meant to them since.

£136,000 to create the production & tour it. Income from venues + schools averages at £23,000, & we're receiving £53,500 in support from co-productions & partners.

That still leaves £59,500 that we need to raise each year. Could you help?

We rarely talk about money when it comes to making theatre. As a rule, all our performances in schools are heavily subsidised, and all the work with young people to develop our shows is offered to those young people for free.

To make this happen, it costs a fair amount!

If you’re interested in helping Theatre Centre to continue bringing powerful, meaningful shows into schools, donate to #SevenDecadesMoneyMatch to help us celebrate our 72nd birthday! All donations until the end of September will be doubled. Thank you! 🙏

Here she tells us about her experience as an actor touring with the show, & the impact it had on the young people watching the show.

"A great group of people who are making theatre relevant to young people and are not frightened to deal with challenging issues... Long may you live, long may be cool!"
- Benjamin Zephaniah, Writer of Listen to Your Parents (2002) "A joyous rehearsal room and combined dramaturgical rigour with ambitious vision."

Our shows for young people don't only have a huge impact on the audiences, but on the artists who create them. Take it from the writers themselves!
"One of the most creatively fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had."
- Katie Redford, Writer of Wish You Weren’t Here (2024) "Writing a play for young people is as important to me as any other play I would write, if not more so."
- Roy Williams, Writer of Soul (2001)

Over our 72 years, our work hasn't been led by 1 particular artist but by the young people & the landscape of theatre in schools. All that said, our Artistic Directors have been key to keeping our mission on track.

Did you know this Friday is our 72nd Birthday? (we've never felt younger, we promise!) To celebrate, we’ll be:

1) Sharing snapshots from our history, insights from recent shows & a look behind the curtain at what it takes to create a Theatre Centre show (not that our productions have curtains...).
