Dillon could *credibly* guard Chet and Wemby without the defense having to bend in half.

What does that mean? He could guard well enough for minor help. Where a teammate could stay near their own guy, and dig for a steal. The “minor help” could prevent a cut from their guy while helping to contest

This year’s *maybe* starting lineup will miss Dillon and Fred being able to hold up on their own assignments with only *minor help*. To a lesser degree, same for Jalen’s defense.

A help help help defense is a tough way to live.

Minor help (or none at all) would allow teammates to box out and prevent an offensive rebound. Major help leads to some frustrating missed rebounds.

That’s why credible POA/ man defense is important.

Fred could mostly do that too against smaller guys. Jalen kind of, but to a lesser degree.

To go a little further. Last year FVV and Dillon could man their assignment without *major* help. Jalen could do this too for most guards and smaller wings. Fred could surprisingly survive versus bigger dudes without compromising the defense. Dillon was the ultimate Swiss army multi-tool.

Reed < FVV
Amen = Amen
Durant > Jalen
Jabari = Jabari
Sengun = Sengun
DFS = Dillon
Tari = Tari
Adams/Capela = Adams
Overall I expect a SLIGHT decline in defense because FVV was that important.
Durant and improvement from our young guys should help

The problem is that the starters lost one good POA defender (FVV) one above average POA defender (Dillon) and one average POA defender (Jalen). Durant being overall a better defender than Jalen does not help that. Jabari being the same does not help that. Reed does not help

So. Fred injury is a blessing and a curse. Sure, would love his shooting and defense and leadership. But would we have gotten SenHub with Fred here? Or would Ime being forcing Fred-KD/ Fred-Alpi actions?

Watching the #rockets play yday night brings me back to two moments in recent history.

1) when we first got James and D’Antoni made him the point guard. We are finally getting SenHub and it is beautiful.

2) when CP3 came and plugged in all the late game execution problems we had…. KD 🥹
