In country after country, far-right populists offer easy solutions to often non-existent crises, fuelling xenophobia, jealousy, rage for votes. Once in power, they (ab)use their position, serve themselves, & keep people angry while solving nothing. Those who have not yet realised this don't want to.

🇨🇦🇺🇸 I’m sorry to say America…

…you will never live this down. Not in 5 years, not in 50 years…

Never…

Rich men used to pride themselves on being philanthropists. These days, they brag about being philanderers.

This explains everything.

"Your brain isn’t built to make you happy, it's built to keep you alive. So it pays way more attention to threats and forgets the evidence that you're actually doing ok."

Quick tip for all US turkeys,

To be pardoned, just pretend you took part in the Jan 6 attacks. 👍

You're welcome.

Recently, I was shamed for a kitchen hack I excitedly posted. Pls, don’t do that. Don't shame others for learning. We all do, all the time. All we know is acquired, & hopefully nobody made fun of you when you learned. Be excited for people, encourage them, celebrate knowledge.

"If you go back a million minutes, get to the start of 2023. If you go back a billion minutes, you get to the Roman Empire. That's the scale of inequality we're living with." Zack Polanski

Such a brilliant illustration.

Again, @zackpolanski.bsky.social is spot on. Asylum seekers run for their lives. They travel enormous distances at great risk to reach safety. They have no other choice.

That's why deterrence doesn't work (anywhere ... & never has). And the cruelty that comes with it is inexcusable.

This morning, I pickled enough gherkins for the next decade. 😁

That's an 8 litre jar I found at a flea market. I think I let it cool down before falling down the stairs with it.

On Insta, there's a wonderful account called 'The Other British Museum'. It explains, explores all kinds of things round British life.

This, for example. Who founded WHSmith - & more interestingly, why?

Even everyday things around us have a (hi)story.

Today's random #German word of the day is this.

It's got one of those challenging 'ch' sounds. Check out the link for how to say it (Halmafelix is best) and give it a go!

Just seen. One example of many. Pls, if you have a source, link it. We'd rightly question every media outlet that publishes claims such as this w/o naming the source, & it isn't ok on socials either.

Check *everything*.

Just because someone's on 'your' side, doesn't mean it's true.

Twig reading Charlie Kirk quotes to Republican Members of Congress in their own offices.

Her energy and courage are absolutely amazing. No aggression, just pure assertion. She's boss.

At the end of what we call 'Totensonntag' (the last Sunday before Advent when we commemorate our dead), the Christmas season begins.

Time to bring out the handmade advent calendar with 24 crocheted bags & cords.

‘Arabic numerals’
Seriously? How many times!?

For heaven's sake, Europe has been using them since the 10th century.

(And it feels like populist charlatans have been using them to stir up xenophobia ever since.)

Clip from BBC Nationwide about the food 'revolution' in Britain. A wonderfully quirky, good natured, not entirely serious film dating back to October 1969.

Excellent cartoon by Mars Riley.

Allow me to encourage all not to cut off cartoonists' signatures. Cartoons are literally their livelihood. We mostly get them for free. The minimum is to credit them. When you come across a cartoon wil/o credit, a quick reverse search often helps.
