They have an amazing over-sized beak they use to filter food. That's what the one in the picture is doing - skimming for seeds and plant matter...maybe other things. It was nice to watch this guy go back and forth, fairly close to me, skimming on a colorful morning.

It's a good goal. I just learned a little about shovelers in the last couple of years.Like many ducks on the lake right now, they are winter visitors here. I don't see them in the warmer months. You can learn a lot just by looking at them.
