#DementiaCare means supporting someone who's losing the ability to perceive risk. We must juggle autonomy and safety—providing just enough care that they don't refuse help and put themselves in danger. Acceptance of care lies in dignity and autonomy. Success requires respect.
Exciting research: #dementia care partners trained in the DAWN Method of #dementiaCare experienced a 23.1% increase in positive attitudes towards caregiving. Read more about the study

Saying "you should/must/need to, because" doesn't help in #dementia care because we lose the thinking skills needed to make sense of those statements. Rather than explain, distract me or partner with me in doing something fun, or turn my attention elsewhere.

An empowering technique for care partners is to be thoughtful about what is visible and what is not visible in the home. Clutter, or too many options, inhibits choice. Clear off surfaces and put out just the items you want used or selected. Enable me!

It is easier for someone with #dementia to choose between two options or to choose whether to do something or not. Ask, “Would you like a cookie or piece of pie?” rather than “What do you want for dessert?” Presenting options is a way we can empower someone with dementia.
When #dementia takes away memory and rational thought functions, it becomes difficult to make decisions. If we ask our loved ones open-ended questions, we are requiring that they use recall and analysis to find an answer, something they cannot do. Give them options instead.
"We can dramatically improve the emotional environment when we recognize which skills are lost and which are retained, and provide truly strength-based support...Distress is greatly reduced for everyone." Learn more: thedawnmethod.com/dementia-wit...

Dignity lies in autonomy, being able to make decisions and shape our lives the way we wish. When people begin to experience #dementia, they do not lose themselves. They lose themselves when we take away dignity. Look for ways to give me choices and to express my preferences!

#Dementia caregiving means matching your expectations to my abilities. Meeting deadlines and completing tasks is still possible, just not probable. Embrace the possible! Focus on the next step (not on completion) and we'll have our best chance of success.

#Dementia takes away rational thinking and memory skills, but not intuitive skills. We become unable to learn thru memorization but continue to learn from experience. Fill my life with good routines and pleasant experiences!

It’s emotionally painful for our brains to have too little sensory or social stimulation. Agitation, exit-seeking, combative behaviors aren’t really #dementia behaviors; they’re the behaviors we humans exhibit when we’re feeling stressed or afraid.

Low blood sugar, dehydration and poor nutrition all make people physically uncomfortable, and physical discomfort can make us unpleasant company. Looking for ways to maximize nutrition and hydration is another way we can enhance companionship in caregiving.

Dementia caregivers who learned the DAWN Method had a 34.7% decrease in perceived caregiving burden and a 23.1% increase in positive attitudes. Read more about the University of Alabama study at our website.
