Food, history, Maine, cats. What else do you need for a full life?
Clapping!

Oh Buoy! The Coast Guard wants to remove all those silly old floating things called buoys that warn those sailing the Maine coast that they are about to get into trouble. Because, why is the Coast Guard wasting money for something as trivial as saving lives.

Looking at food pictures tonight in anticipation of a quick New York City trip. Definitely going to Katz's Deli. Send a salamee to your boy in the Armee.

I totally agree! Erin French, the soul of The Lost Kitchen, is amazing! (And her recipes are quite tasty, too!)

OK Bluesky cooking friends. We need to talk. Specifically, about the quality of food pictures here. Really, really bad. We need to up our game! Can you beat this? Try!

Seriously!? Isn't that like a class on using an astrolabe? Actually, it would be fun to explore the interplay between what we do and what we think is right based on what we are taught, and how that evolves (or decays). It's a challenge, and those are fun to explore with inquiring student minds.

Just a reminder to appreciate your local firefighters. They are in the news these days, but every day they are helping their communities, and what they do is a whole bunch more than putting out fires!

I so remember that from my adjunct days! It was like blocking out a Broadway show. For you non-teachers, believe me, teaching at the college level is basically performance art.

I made about 7k for a course at Brooklyn College a few years ago. Being called professor & having really great students was nice. Not being able to pay bills was not. Left the job, if you can call it a job. Including all the prep, grading & etc. it worked out to about minimum wage.

We don't celebrate St. Lucia Day per se, but we love a holiday with very specific foods, and these lussekatter are so much fun to make and to eat! Lighting candles and snacking on saffron buns is a delightful way to bask in the cold darkness of December. Recipe from @johannak.bsky.social

To the commentators on the murder of the United Healthcare CEO: You viewed the lionizing of the killer as a sign of ill in our society. Quite right, quite obvious. But who has commented on the depth of public rage over health insurance practices and how little is done to curtail those practices.

Rachel L. Swarns is always worth reading! This history-based article pulls together many issues: patriarchy, enslavement, racism, America and so much more. (Possible conflict note: Rachel & I worked for the same newspaper, but I rarely talked to her.) www.nytimes.com/2024/11/22/u...

Anyone have any suggestions for a good woodstove? My beloved 1977 Vermont Castings needs replacing. I really want another model with a fireplace feature.
