👉 The EU and its member states must ensure that asylum systems are fair and humane. Doing so will protect rights and strengthen newcomers’ sense of belonging, enabling them to contribute and participate fully in society.

Mental health support must begin the moment people’s journeys start, not only after their trauma has multiplied.
theecre.bsky.social
Instead of offering protection, Europe’s asylum and migration policies too often deepen this suffering—through pushbacks, unfair procedures, lack of reception, and restrictions on rights.

Women, men, and children are forced to leave behind homes, loved ones, and familiar lives, while carrying the trauma of displacement, separation, persecution, war, and instability.

The search for safety in Europe does not end at a border or within a set time but becomes an open-ended struggle, sustained by the hope for certainty, dignity, security, and stability, while constantly confronted with bureaucracy, discrimination, and everyday violence.

❤️‍🩹 On #MentalHealthDay, the search for safety in Europe is more than a physical journey—it is a deeply emotional passage.

🧵 An estimated 30–43% of people with a forced migration background experience PTSD and depression—far higher rates than in the general population.

In 2024, 41,779 children arrived in Europe by sea and land, including 21,323 who were unaccompanied.

🔔This is not normal and must never be accepted as such. Restrictive policies & absence of safe routes force children to undertake dangerous journeys in search of asylum.

This should never be normal. Children risk these journeys because there are no safe alternatives to reach safety and their loved ones.

That's the direct result of restrictive policies that leave children with no other choice.

👉 Attacks against refugees and those who support them stem from rhetoric spread not only by the far right but also by parties across the political centre and left.
👉Organisations and individuals advocating for human rights will never be intimidated by such hostility.

▪️A continuing lack of political will to end the preventable deaths of people seeking safety in Europe.
theecre.bsky.social
▪️Ongoing delayed or even ignored alerts of assistance from distressed people at sea.
▪️Widespread use of language that criminalises, dehumanises, and shifts blame onto people on the move for being forced into deadly journeys.
theecre.bsky.social
▪️A growing emphasis on combating “migrant smuggling,” ignoring that this industry thrives on people’s desperation and the absence of safe and legal routes to protection.
▪️The fortification of borders and the extension of control measures across several EU member states.

What we are witnessing instead is 👇
▪️ The expansion of partnerships with countries like Tunisia and Egypt aimed at intercepting and detaining people on the move, preventing them from reaching European shores to claim asylum.

The painful reality is that, despite countless promises, the EU has taken no meaningful action to stop such tragedies.

🆘People continue to die on their way to safety while EU policies increasingly focus on deterrence rather than protection.

Since then, more than 32,000 women, men, and children have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean in search of safety.

🔎This tragic anniversary is a reminder to reflect on what actions the EU has taken to prevent further loss of life at its borders.
