Sukkot begins tonight. While the Sukkah (hut) is meant to be a reminder of the biblical Exodus, living in a hut should also remind us of those who are food and housing insecure. May we live understanding of our history as well as our obligations towards those in need. Chag Sameach, a Happy Sukkot!

In our world today, we see forces that would try to destroy the order of the world and return it to the tohu va’vohu, primordial chaos. Terror and warfare effect us directly or indirectly; emet – truth, a name of God, is under attack; scientific & medical knowledge is threatened.

Jewish tradition connects Rosh Hashana to the creation story in the Torah. At the dawn of creation, the Torah tells us the world was tohu va’vohu — chaotic, unformed, dark. God didn’t destroy the chaos; God transformed it. God brought light, boundaries, and purpose to the world.

On this date in 2001, I was at a polling place in a firehouse on Long Island as the TV showed the first attack. Election day as enemies of freedom & democracy attacked both. We still have those who would end both. We must rededicate ourselves to freedom throughout our world.

Sad & angry about shooting murder of Charlie Kirk & shootings at Evergreen HS. May we join in action to change America's gun culture and to enact common sense gun laws that restrict military-type assault weapons and safeguard second amendment rights for law abiding and mentally stable citizens.

Rather than focusing on change of Cracker Barrel logo, let's focus on how we unite to change America's toxic gun culture, and find common ground to work for sensible gun laws. May all those murdered today in Minneapolis, and all who've died in mass shootings across our country inspire us.
