Black women deserve the full toolbox for SRH, not either/or since there is not a one size fits all model to care.

How do y’all think we should be talking about female-controlled options in 2025, while still promoting the most efficacious and discreet options?
PrEP is often called the 1st female-controlled HIV prevention. Female condoms are available & protect against HIV/STIs, can be placed up to 8 hrs before sex, but are NOT discreet (& barely promoted)

That’s why I say: PrEP is the first discreet female-controlled option—and that distinction matters.
— It showed 100% efficacy in cis women during trials.
— It could be a breakthrough for Black women, who face higher HIV risk + stigma around daily meds.
— @Gilead’s licensing could expand access in 120+ countries, but equity requires action, not just availability.
—WHO recommends it…this is global.
I spoke with Melanie Hastings of 7News DC about the game-changing approval of lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injectable PrEP option.

It’s a huge step forward—but 3 mins flies by, so here’s what I didn’t get to say:
Intersectionality should be used to challenge and transform NOT just describe.
In public health, education, justice reform, etc., if your work invokes intersectionality, ask yourself:

1. Are you naming the systems of oppression involved?
2. Are you centering those most impacted?
3. Are you pushing for systemic accountability and not just surface level inclusion?
When we reduce intersectionality to a buzzword we ignore the power dynamics it was intended to expose and strip its analytical power. This framework is about naming and confronting the interlocking systems that produce inequity and NOT just counting categories like race, gender, or class.
Intersectionality is NOT simply about listing/describing identities. It is a framework to name and analyze how systems of power intersect and compound to create differential experiences of marginalization and privilege, especially for those whose identities overlap in structurally marginalized ways.
I say this not from a place of judgment, but from experience. Before I engaged deeply with the literature, attended @intersectionalitytraining.com Research Salons led by Dr. Lisa Bowleg, and completed coursework across multiple institutions, I too misunderstood or oversimplified the concept.
I want to take a moment to clarify a critical point because the continued misuse of "intersectionality" in academic discourse, scholarship, and practice is not only frustrating, it is intellectually careless and can be very harmful.
@statacorp.bsky.social & I have been going strong for 5 years on this very exhausting #PhDjourney. This cute gift set couldn’t have come at a better time. Thank you so much to the STATA team for this gift 💕

If you want to be invited to the public portion of my dissertation defense (once scheduled) please DM or text me your email! I don't want to miss anyone but my brain is completely fried! There will be virtual option so anyone near and far can tune in. #phdjourney
it was soul-nourishing to be reminded that we are the movement. We’re not just reacting to the moment; we’re uniquely positioned to reshape the future.
Being in spaces curated for and by us—leaders historically underrepresented in research, advocacy, and clinical care—wasn’t just timely..it was essential! As the political landscape grows increasingly hostile towards equity and justice-driven work, especially across HIV and SRH,
I just returned from two transformative events—the National PrEP in Black America Research Strategy Meeting and NMAC’s Biomedical HIV Prevention Summit. I’m left feeling a mix of urgency, gratitude, and renewed resolve.

Log off. Tune out the noise. Choose yourself.
The world feels so heavy—turmoil in Haiti, rising xenophobia/racism/sexism, attacks on my research agenda, PhD’ing in isolation, job hunting, healing, etc. In the midst of it all, I’m choosing me. I’m choosing gratitude. #MentalHealth
This isn't about choosing sides because I want both these women to thrive, it's about seeing the bigger picture and having a very real conversation. We have to choose liberation and community over crumbs.

I just hope this is a lesson that there is room for all of us and what's for you is YOURS! The lies are that there isn't space or that someone's light dims yours.

Until we start actively rejecting those lies, we'll continue to see brilliance squandered, energy wasted, and sisterhood fractured.

This is how these systems operate. By keeping us distracted and competing. By rewarding performative inclusion. By discouraging collective power. And it's not just in entertainment, it's in corporate boardrooms, hospitals, nonprofits, and universities.

Jess seems to be surrounded by colleagues who:
1. Will never truly validate her worth & can't because she has intrinsic worth.
2. Keep her in a constant state of insecurity because their power depends on her self-doubt and constant auditioning

Loren is getting her own show, in her own lane without having to compete. Meanwhile, Jess unfortunately remains in rooms with people that seemingly aren't pouring into her & who she acknowledges made things uncomfortable for her predecessor, Angela Yee (we need to unpack special ❄️ syndrome)
