When you are aware of how your inner world interacts with another’s story, you are better able to remain grounded, avoid reactivity, and offer care that is both compassionate and clinically wise. -Scott A. Fleming

Effective #spiritualcare begins with the use of self as a disciplined instrument, informed by the behavioral sciences and shaped by reflective practice. Notice your emotional responses, body language, and assumptions in each encounter, these often communicate more than your words. 1/x #medsky

This is why the salvation of the Universe is also our salvation, why solidarity among humans is no longer a tenderhearted luxury but a deep necessity and self-preservation the salvation of your fellow person. - Nikos Kazantzakis #soulsignals #wisdom #spiritualcare

Today on Volts: I'm joined by the great @michaelhobbes.bsky.social to discuss "reactionary centrism," an intellectual tendency that's come to dominate US public life. You know the type: would never view themselves as conservative, yet finds voluntary pronoun use vastly more aggravating than fascism.
All about "reactionary centrism"
Michael Hobbes joins me to diagnose the pundit class's obsession with scolding the left while the right burns down the house.

*nods* It’s wearying. I don’t see much distance b/w Moore & Mohler. The former brands himself differently.

They should be asked as an additional question to explain how their interpretation of Romans 13 relates to Revelation 13 and for double bonus marks to comment on William Stringfellow's discussion of these passages. Asking Baptists to discuss an Episcopalian's theology I know is a stretch

The “we” is Moore opposing Mohler and their respective constituents. Two streams contesting the meaning/application of Rom 13

I am not a suspended, rootless thing in the world. I am earth of its earth and breath of its breath. I am not alone in my fear, nor alone in my hope, nor alone in my shouting. A tremendous host, an onrush of the Universe fears, hopes, and shouts with me.

Why are we contesting the out of context meaning of other people's mail from 2000 years ago? Both Moore and Mohler hold beliefs that violate basic human rights as the will of God. Both want to impose their religion on others as a condition of their "religious freedom". @daviddark.bsky.social

Christianity Today's Russell Moore criticized Christians who “whenever an agent of the state kills a person in morally questionable circumstances … go right to Romans 13, quoting it before the blood is even cleaned up from the ground.”

Christians will (and do) oppose civil authorities no matter what Romans 13 says

#Faith should liberate, not endanger. Protection requires both material resources AND cultural transformation.

True #spiritualcare means building communities where:

All people have inherent dignity
Safety supersedes institutional preservation
Accountability is sacred work
Leaving violence is supported, not shamed
Religious freedom never means violating human rights

When sacred texts are weaponized to enforce control, forgiveness is mandated w/out accountability, divorce is stigmatized regardless of danger, basic human rights are opposed—these teachings remove protective factors rather than strengthening them. Spiritual harm compounds physical harm. 7/8 #medsky

The Critical Caveat
However, religious communities that teach rigid gender hierarchy, unconditional submission, or "preservation of family at all costs" actually increase vulnerability to violence. #Theology has consequences. Bad theology kills. 6/8 #medsky #spiritualcare #exvangelical

Faith Communities: A Complex Factor
Belonging to #faith or cultural communities that ACTIVELY PROMOTE NONVIOLENCE AND EQUALITY can be profoundly protective. These communities model healthy relationships, provide material support, and create cultures of accountability. 5/8 #medsky #spiritualcare

Skills for Navigating Crisis
Good #coping and problem-solving skills function as internal resources when external circumstances become dangerous. #Education and #employment opportunities don't just provide income—they build self-efficacy, social networks, and pathways out. 4/8 #medsky

Economic Stability = Safety Options
Access to stable #housing and income isn't just about comfort—it's about survival. Financial dependence traps people in dangerous situations. When individuals have economic resources and housing security, they have the power to leave and rebuild. 3/8 #medsky

Social Support Matters Profoundly
Strong connections with friends, family, and #community create accountability and refuge. When someone has people who notice changes, ask questions, and offer sanctuary without judgment, isolation—a primary tactic of abuse—becomes harder to maintain. #medsky

It’s also very disheartening that this is where we are. Hospice workers have to be prepared for abusers disrupting end of life care. Nothing is sacred.
