This has been an eye-opening journey into the history of our railways from pioneering ideas to profiteering, poor planning, politics, patchiness & procrastination (which often all applies to other UK transport too).

If anyone would like to read it, I’ve put it on the bookshelf at Cambridge North 📚

My family has spent lots of our life on trains - including several birthdays - and today it is the trains’ turn to celebrate. 200 years since the birth of the modern railway: thank you rail for all the rides and the memories 🚆💕

On 1 May it’s decision time for Cambridgeshire. Will we back pedal on progress or fast track to the future?

Cast your vote for:

- easier commutes
- safe cycle routes
- better pavements
- clean air

Two diagrams positioned side-by-side and separated by a vertical dashed line under the title 'Decision time: Back-pedal on progress or fast track to the future?'. Both diagrams show a street with a row of buildings. The left-hand diagram has three lanes of nose-to-tail motor traffic, together with a row of parked cars and narrow pavements. The labels say 'people stuck in traffic', 'pollution affecting everyone', 'no safe space for cycling' and 'cluttered pavements'. The right-hand diagram has two wide pavements, two wide cycle lanes and two lanes of motor traffic. There are lots of people walking and wheeling, as well as people cycling standard and non-standard cycles and five motor vehicles. The labels say 'people can get to work', 'cleaner air saving lives', 'protected routes enable cycling' and 'pavements with space for people'. Cyclinguk.org/infrastructure

I’m so angry about this, the absolute arrogance from a social justice point of view as well - essentially saying “it’s all too hard for us to change in the rich west, technology will have to save us.”

“Environmentally friendly modes of transport are booming in Munich and now constitute nearly 80 percent of total traffic. The results are cleaner air, fewer traffic jams on the streets, and lower CO2 emissions.”

More of this please.

Well done to the people who cycle and work for cycling in Bishop’s Stortford despite the difficulties. There’s so much potential here! Join @cyclestortford.bsky.social if you haven’t already and help them make the town a better place for all who ride 🚲

Instead we spent our pennies in this excellent charity shop and friendly cafe, and went for a stroll around the Waytemore castle ruins.

This bus gate looked intriguing but my girl was growing bored of our infrastructure tour so I’ll have to save that for another day.

We did find one cycle lane though! The excitement at this discovery was tempered by how underwhelming this bit of paint was. Not going to tempt many people to switch their journey from driving…

There were a lot of cars and roads that were less than cycle friendly. I noted to my daughter how noisy the traffic was. “And smelly!” she said.

I visited Stortford with my daughter for a football match. Bad news: it was cancelled while we were on the train down. Good news: more time to explore! During the 2.5 hours we were there, we saw 8 cyclists and 4 parked bikes. Bonus points for those root-fixed Sheffield stands at Aldi & the library.

I had a meeting with @cyclestortford.bsky.social last week and they told me that Bishop’s Stortford was “the town that cycling forgot”. Based on my experience this weekend, it’s hard to disagree. The river path was quite nice though…

So many challenges in the active travel charity sector where decent, reliable funding could achieve so much impact. Sounds like you’ve done some exciting stuff recently though and have a great new role ahead too - congratulations!
