Hey, I’m Dan Rivkin and I’ve been writing about the Beatles’ Get Back sessions since 2012 at theymaybeparted.com. Same guy you’ve seen @theymaybeparted in all the other places.

Happy 85th to the good Dr. Winston O’ Boogie! From the TMBP archives, written 10 years ago: A year in the life, contrasting the period between John Lennon’s birthdays in 1968 & '69 with the period between Paul McCartney's birthdays the same years. theymaybeparted.com/2015/10/09/t...
TMBP Extra: Celebrate anything you want
Three years ago in this space, we celebrated Paul McCartney’s 70th birthday with a brief look back at the period between June 18, 1968 and 1969, a stretch that straddled the Get Back/Let It B…

I’m following these movies from something of a distance, but the fact we’re getting a Linda means we’re getting 1967-69 Beatles in these films (we don’t actually know timeline details yet, right?) and I’m happy with that much, at least.

Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Linda McCartney, the late musician who was Paul McCartney’s first wife, in The Beatles Movies, Sony’s fab four biopics slated for 2028. She joins Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan and Joseph Quinn. What we know: bit.ly/4h27RJC

Greetings from the beautiful Akron Civic Theater, where I’m catching younger half of the McCartney-McManus songwriting team. I’ve seen him live maybe 6 or 7 times before but not for 25 years, somehow

Happy anniversary to our beloved Abbey Road LP, a spry 56 years old today and sounding as freshly fab as it did Sept. 26, 1969, the day it was released. Usual shameless promo: Catch up on Abbey Road’s deep roots in the Beatles’ Get Back sessions here: theymaybeparted.com/tag/abbey-ro...

For most of the 13 1/2-plus years I’ve written They May Be Parted, my dog Abbey Road would snooze either across from me on the couch or beside me on the floor as I typed. She was my everything companion and a wonderful dog. She left the material world Thursday but will always, always be here.

The Greatest Tea Room Orchestra in the World took the stage 57 years ago today, when the Beatles performed “Hey Jude” for Frost on Sunday. The experience planted the seeds and was a notable influence on the Get Back sessions months later. Related posts here! theymaybeparted.com/tag/hey-jude/

Celebrating the memory of Billy Preston, who was born 79 years ago today, Sept. 2, 1946! 🎹🎂

Could be - I’ll be impressed and honored if they remembered a three-year old tweet.

Incredibly, when ChatGPT first came out, I played with it and tweeted out the results, which specifically included Scenario B
theymaybeparted.bsky.social
Yeah, I’d go as A as well. B would be fun, however.

I posted this thread a couple years ago to celebrate the birthday of the incomparable Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, and of course it still applies today, as we mark No 68 🎂 🧵
theymaybeparted.bsky.social
It's the 66th birthday of the great Glenn Tilbrook, so as per TMBP tradition, I'll stay on brand & share some Beatles covers and connections in this little thread. He and Squeeze songwriting partner Chris Difford never liked being called the next Lennon/McCartney, yet it stuck 🧵

The front page of the nearby Oakland Tribune: "Beatles' Screaming Teenies"

The page featured the on-field chaos and called out the money the Beatles were making.

A widely distributed UPI wire story also dwelled on the poor attendance and their fading fame.

One fan: "The beatles [sic] are nice, but they're not worth getting hysterical over," she said during the performance. "Actually, I think they are on the way down in popularity."

Meanwhile, the concert was pretty poorly reviewed by contemporary media. The headline in the next day's San Francisco Examiner: "Beatles Strike Out at Ball Park"

... We hear Paul say: “We’d like to carry on, I think. I’m not sure really sure yet. I’d like to carry on, certainly! Well, shall we just watch this for a bit first?” Eventually he introduces “Paperback Writer”.

The moment of the image is described: [T]hey do “Nowhere Man" and at the end of that number Paul finds himself ad libbing a bit while the security guards race across the field to catch up with several fans who had broken through from the crowd and were heading for the stage ..

The November 1968 Beatles Book describes Tony Barrow’s personal cassette of the Candlestick Park show in an article about unreleased Beatles recordings. It’s under the subheading “GRIM”
theymaybeparted.bsky.social
This was the scene at Candlestick Park during the Beatles' final tour date, 59 years ago today. And as I ask every Aug. 29 when I post this: Could you blame them for not wanting to play on stage before an audience anymore?
