Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire, it's so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

I don't post music unless it's unusually exceptional. I saw these guys last year at the Bluenote.

The Second Fall of Rome
The Pre-Socratics had pretty much figured it all out. They articulated the universally valid laws of mathematics, geometry, and deduction; the laws upon which all human reason stands.

Power is not about the size or number of bombs.

Power is human beings working together to achieve a goal.

At the battle of Salamis Themistocles defeated the massively superior Persian fleet by luring the Persian vessels into the straits where they were outmaneuvered by the swift Greek ships.

Whether primitive humans were, “brutish,” or, “noble savages,” modern human social stratification starts as a deliberate choice in a condition among equals. Neither Hobbes nor Rousseau, but Locke. The condition in which humankind first begins to exercise contingent choice.

The president is the vestigial member of absolutism. Instead of deriving power from providence, the president is delivered power from an equally problematic source- the general will- a philosophical fallacy. Co-existence and absolute independence are incompatible concepts.

Stalin's purges in the 1930's eliminated his political rivals and the cadre of top military officers leaving the Soviet army woefully unprepared when Hitler invaded Russia. Stalin's revolutionary comrade, Voroshilov, upbraided Stalin in front of the entire politburo...and lived to tell about it.

Trump blames everything that's wrong on Biden.
And in a way he's right.

Things are so bad now because Biden let Trump get away with Jan 6.

Humans have found ways to calibrate, count, and accumulate, the passing of events since the beginning of time…pun intended! The earliest sundials date from the fourth millennium BC. The water clock came (by ancient standards) soon thereafter.

Primitive humans, in their early nomadic existence, walked upon the earth with nothing permanent to guide them but the stars. They gazed at the twinkling firmament and saw a celestial dome mapped out like the paintings on a cave wall.

Your comments on the downside of AI are spot on.

Standardization of technology leads to conformity of behavior. Conformity of behavior ends with the loss of autonomous thinking.

A moderate and unbiased account of Jihad and Shariah law. Muhammad Asad (born Leopold Weiss) was a Viennese Jew who converted to Islam and became the most important scholar of Islamic law in the 20th century. Asad was an aide to Ibn Saud, founder and first king of Saudi Arabia. (MBS's granduncle)

Fascism reduces every human being as a means to an end.

Liberal democracy elevates every human being as an end in themselves.

Eternal Recurrence and Rectilinear Time
Eternal recurrence and rectilinear time exist side-by-side in different dimensions. Eternal recurrence is in tune with the rhythm of the universe. The return of day and night. The cycle of the seasons. Life, death, and rebirth.
