Regardless of reading level, the "fantasy industrial complex" induces feelings in them that they prefer to real life. When given facts contrary to the fantasy, they dismiss them so they can maintain the feeling. They are prisoners of banality.

Corporate Farms will offer them $0.40 on the dollar, and the farmers will reject it on principle. Then when they come back, they will offer them $0.15 cents on the dollar, and they'll take it.
