Great egrets are opportunistic eaters - something the big birds and I have in common. This one was hunting fish at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Monday.
Trumpeter swans, back from the brink of extinction, have it pretty good today in protected places like Ohio's only National Wildlife Refuge, where this one was swimming carefree Monday.

This wooly bear is forecasting a warm winter, based on the thickness of its brown band. The meteorologist I was with when I came across the caterpillar at Howard Marsh this morning neither agreed or disagreed with that prediction.
