dude this party is such an echo chamber. it's just friends hanging out and chilling and having a good time. you need to invite some people over who want to kill you with hammers

So @kierongillen.bsky.social's "Power Fantasy" fascinates me because it's exactly the sort of comic that you'd think a thoughtful, philosophical-minded author familiar with the industry would have already written, so it'd stand on the shoulders of multiple giants. But it DOESN'T, which is amazing.

Really important point here -- the law Trump broke when he fired 18 inspectors general on Friday was a law Congress passed in direct response to Trump's firing of inspectors general during his first term.

And it probably won't matter at all.

Trump Just Broke the Law. Blatantly. And He Might Get Away With It.
How is this not a major political scandal already? Hello, Democrats?

I've had a number of friends join here recently, and just wanted to remind them, PSA-style, that one way we keep the bots and trolls to a minimum is just to block stupid people immediately, without replying to them. Don't give them any engagement.

I don't know how much of my dark mood over the last week is due to the election and how much is due to my decision to let my Wordle streak expire in solidarity with the NYT tech strike.

I'm comforted by how the kids have responded: with horror, but determination. Especially because I'M kind of exhausted, and am losing faith in my own ability to carry that metaphorical banner indefinitely; believing that I can lay it down and there WILL be someone to pick it up helps a great deal.

anyway it's probably fine, it is definitely reasonable to have a machine that lies confidently about things you may not be certain about. a program that's baked into the OS and designed to be turned to for help when you're stuck and uncertain SHOULD randomly make shit up, including references,

I found myself apologizing to someone the other day for not being more creative. Like, I SHOULD probably be writing or painting or crafting more. But it was a little weird to have someone else call me out on it, for a few reasons.

It's extremely petty of me to complain about this, but today's Connection was disappointing in a weirdly thorough way. It was like someone had asked their five-year-old to explain the concept of the game to an AI, and then forced that AI to come up with the day's puzzle.

One of my friends just installed a networked watercooler that requires employees to scan their badges to access water. We're trying to think of charitable reasons his employer believes that'll produce actionable information.
