This was the most fun I've had in making an edit since...well, my last edit! I love Judy as a character and saw, in my experience, little to no edits of her? So I hope this does right by her.

The fact he kept the carrot pen after all that time likely meant he had been waiting for her return, if not a token of her and their time together. Like Z2 continued to prove, Nick may not care for much, but when he does, it's an immense fondness.

There's something so endearing about how Nick, after 'breaking up' with Judy and was crestfallen by her words, still welcomed her back almost immediately with a look that screams "I've been waiting for you."
