I spent a couple of hours last night digging out my driveway so we could get the car out if we needed to. This morning there is a 4 or 5 foot tall, 6+ foot mountain of slop blocking it thanks to the snow plows deciding it was a great place to push everything from the intersection. 😭💀

I have this tendency to fill my time with constant input. Reading, listening to podcasts, having music on in the background. I’ve been trying to change that lately. I think about this quote from “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind” a lot. Heading out to shovel snow now with no headphones. 😂

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

I’m really enjoying the new Youth Novel album. I’ve come back to it several times this week. It scratches a uniquely “90s screamo” itch while still packing some surprising and fresh moments.

Starting a thread for my reflection posts as I read through Les Miserables this year at the pace of a chapter a day. I'll collect all of the existing posts here and add to it when I post in the future.

Here's my initial post about this project:

Gave Caspian’s “on Circles” a spin today - it was released exactly 6 years ago. Over the last 6 years it’s become my favorite release in their catalog.

I think about this quote from Kahneman’s “Thinking, Fast and Slow” often. Sometimes I feel strongly that I “never would have done ___ or said ___” when watching people who are part of the evangelicalism I left behind. The thing is I don’t really know because I no longer occupy that space.

Continuing to read "Les Miserables" at the pace of a chapter a day then write a daily reflection. Today I read part 1, book 2, chapter 3 - the first meeting of Valjean & Myriel. Valjean experiences the power of being fully known and still fully loved.

I’m reading Mark Fisher’s “Capitalist Realism” and so much of what he was observing in 2008 is still relevant today. Quoting a section here:

“It would be a mistake to regard this market Stalinism as some deviation from the ‘true spirit’ of capitalism.

There are many many good people out there. Be clear-eyed about what is happening, but don't let the cruelty and cynicism overwhelm you.
Minneapolis church has delivered more than 12,000 boxes of groceries to families in hiding
DHH church has hundreds of volunteers packing and delivering groceries to families who have been too scared to leave their homes during the immigration operation.

If you like your post-rock to feature meditative repetition of angular riffs with vocals drenched in the tones of 90s college radio, all put together by actual youths from the UK, you need this in your life.

"He was a simple soul who loved, and that was all." - my favorite quote of the last chapter of book 1 from part 1 of Victor Hugo's novel "Les Miserables". A fitting description of a bishop Hugo spends 14 chapters introducing us to.

Two weeks into the new year and I used my turntable for the first time. I guess when I’m sick I don’t want to be hanging out in my office 😂.

I finished my third book of 2026 during lunch today. “The Story of Christianity: An Illustrated History of 2000 Years of the Christian Faith” by David Bentley Hart.

I’ve read a good bit of church history in the past but wanted a nice quick and broad overview and this delivered!

Thoughts from Les Miserables chapter 11:

Victor Hugo's take on the relationship between art and luxury was bad. A product of his time and culture, but still bad.

Today I read and wrote about the 10th chapter in Les Miserables. It's my favorite one so far, and made me do some thinking abut Tillich's concept of "God as The Ground of Being" for the first time in a while. a nice little dose of shared (a)theism.
