I think you are mistaking nonviolent resistance for just protest. Thats the most basic form, but i also means breaking unjust laws and getting arrested. Leaders have to do this. Nonviolence is not passive

It still works, in fact better. After the civil war for instance we slid back very quickly into basically the same things with a different look. The civil rights movement, however, has a more lasting effect. We unfortunately just let our guard down, but it can still work.

I'm so thankful for Chicago political leadership right now. Yes Pritzker and/or Johnson might be arrested. But unfortunately nonviolent resistance often invites this for the greater good. Mandela, Ghandi, etc. Its scary, but courageous leaders are necessary.
