The Talk Talk lyric I'm thinking about today:

"Don't look back until you've tried.
With time you'll endlessly arrive
Outside of use,
With just tomorrow starting"

The Talking Heads lyric I'm thinking about today:

"That man was my hero
And now that word has been taken from us
Some things can never be spoken
Some things cannot be pronounced
That word does not exist in any language
It will never be uttered by a human mouth"

🗣️ Madonna
🎶 Live To Tell

Spoilt for choice with 80s Madonna, but I couldn't resist this ballad.

Originally touted as an instrumental for another film, Madonna rewrote and co-produced the song to make a classic of the decade.

Incredible mate, a lifelong affair. I hope I have 30 years and then some in his company.

It is beyond ridiculous what he's done to me - I knew from the moment I heard Singapore that he was special, but it's just been a treasure trove at every turn.

Every single album feels like something special, I wish I could put him into words, but it's impossible, just like doing my #Top30TomWaits

I loved it Ricky; such a good recommendation. I've listened to it a good four or five times in full - The Garden is one of my favourite song discoveries of the year.

It's everything you'd expect, want, and need from a Tom Waits album, paint by numbers in the best way.

Emotional ballads, carnivalistic joys, and experimental tunes all take up a really streamlined and focussed record.

Auld Lang Syne closing things out feels perfect.

There's a lifetime of listening to Tom Waits to come; he's overtaken Talking Heads as my favourite musical discovery of the past couple of years.

And his final record (barring a surprise comeback) is yet another quality piece of work...

🗣️ Tom Waits
💿 Bad As Me

I can't believe this is it.

I'll come to the album in the next post (I loved it of course), but I am beyond all manner of feelings that my Tom Waits journey is at a close.

Or at least, the opening chapter is...

You're very welcome - it seems to be low down a lot of people's Waits lists, but it's so good.

Tom Waits told Bonnie to dream.

And dream she did. Who couldn't sleep in dream-soaked sleep listening to the gorgeous vocals of Mr Waits...🎶🐶

It's fascinating, and because it tanked commercially, Head never again made anything quite as magnificently brave as this. It's a real shame, because he had all the makings of a cult artist right from the get-go.
top10nathan.bsky.social
But for an artist I only knew for his musical work, his debut record is surprisingly audacious - a genuine thrill with plenty of highlights, and a fair few lows mixed in too.

If, like me, you're more familiar with One Night In Bangkok, this is a shock to the senses...

🗣️ Murray Head
💿 Nigel Lived

A* for effort!

Not everything here comes off excellently for Head, and his concept album of a boy who goes to the city, becomes a man, becomes a druggie, and then loses it all isn't the most unique story...

Sorry to hear that mate, fingers crossed you're feeling better soon.

Music might not be an antidote, but it's the best painkiller there is.

Cheers Richard! And just when I thought my top five was sorted, in comes Soul Mining to the thinking 😁

The lyric I'm thinking about today:

Television - Marquee Moon

"I spoke to a man down at the tracks
And I ask him
How he don't go mad
He said, "Look here, junior, don't you be so happy
And for heaven's sake, don't you be so sad"

Yeah, it wasn't until much later that it was made a The The album in retrospect - I suppose technically you could have either or both! If Soul Mining is a potential, then I'll be all over it having a place in my five!
top10nathan.bsky.social
I've left off Sade and Prefab Sprout here too, there's just too many to remember.

Not sure actually, I'll tag @richards7370.bsky.social in for jurisdiction.

Are we going for Burning Blue Soul or Soul Mining as the The The debut?

Talking Heads' 'Remain In Light' was released #OnThisDay in 1980.

Largely recognised as the band's tour de force, David Byrne & Co's magnum opus is a triumphant blend of genres, innovative rhythms, and bombastic soundscapes.

A legendary record that still sounds like the future.

Thank you - I'm really looking forward to carrying on with them. A band I hear so much about, but outside a couple of songs, know next to nothing by them. Can't wait to change that.
top10nathan.bsky.social
Incredible record - takes the first two Bjork albums and ups the ante, experimentation and soundscapes to another level entirely.
top10nathan.bsky.social
For me, probably the biggest upgrade between a Talking Heads studio album version and a live version, although I do still enjoy the FOM version, it definitely lacks something.

I had always just assumed it was Tina singing too, but having watched it again now, it's so obvious she isn't! How funny 😂
