NC is home to 130k+ American Indians & 8 state-recognized tribes: Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of Saponi, Sappony, & Waccamaw Siouan.
Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day in North Carolina.

Observed on the second Monday in October, this day honors the perseverance, cultures, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Welcome back, teachers- ready to make the new school year unforgettable? We are here to support you with the Learning Happens Here Field Trip Fund, which will reimburse costs to visit any of the 100+ sites/programs managed by the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, including Town Creek!
Join us for family fun & experiment molding a medium that’s older than dirt! Learn the pinch-pot pottery technique to craft & decorate a clay container just like the people of Town Creek did 1,000 years ago. This activity is $3 per person & offered at 10am, 12pm, & 2pm. See you at the mound!
1st Saturdays @ Town Creek: Atlatl Day!
Visit Town Creek June 7 & learn to use a spear thrower that dates to the last ice age. Proceeds benefit The Friends of Town Creek Indian Mound Inc., which supports programs at Town Creek Indian Mound.
Activity Times: 10am, 12pm, and 2pm
Cost: $3 per person.

Town Creek will be closed Friday, April 18 in observance of the Easter holiday. The site will be open 9am - 5pm Saturday, April 19.

On April 1, 1937, Lloyd Frutchey, a Montgomery County farmer, donated land containing a Mississippian-era Indian mound to the state of NC for excavation, interpretation & protection.
In 1955, Town Creek became NC’s first State Historic Site.

The smoke hole in the townhouse roof at Town Creek acts as a camera obscura, & is especially dramatic on windy, partly cloudy days. A camera obscura is a unit that projects images of the outside world onto a dark surface, from the Latin words camera meaning "room" & obscura meaning "dark.”
