#TIL in #hullhist in 1876, the Hull People's Cocoa House Company was formed in response to concerns about alcoholism in the city. By 1878, the company had 9 cocoa houses across #Hull, and in 1879 served non-alcoholic drinks to 1,200,000 customers. (Source: Foster, 'Living & Dying,' 126-27.)

#TIL in #hullhist that the bomb vessel HMS Hecla, sister ship of the famous HMS Erebus of Franklin Expedition fame, 'was built at Hessle Cliff, in 1815, by Messrs. Barkworth and Hawkes.' (Source: Sheahan, History of Kingston upon Hull, 1866.)

#TIL in #hullhistory - Hull's part in James Clark Ross's 1829 expedition to the #Arctic, when he became the first European to pinpoint the Magnetic North Pole. Stranded in the ice, the expedition was saved in 1833 by the #Hull whaler Isabella, and Ross received a rapturous reception back in Hull.

Absolutely - it certainly doesn't appeal to me at all..! Got to respect those folks for doing it. And of course they had a lot of losses, which was all part of the job I suppose, sadly.

Researching the history of fishing in #hull, I came across this rare footage from the early 1900s, showing 'box fleeting,' a method of commercial fishing that ended in the 1930s. Gives a real sense of the hard work and danger of this occupation: youtu.be/G19NpN-PnU8?...
