When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office on January 1, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs.

Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.
Have you called Speaker Adams yet today? Tell her why we need universal daylighting, and urge her to bring Intro 1138 to a vote: 212-482-6731
We have just three weeks left to pass universal daylighting — and the biggest thing standing in the way? Daylighting obstructors.

Universal daylighting is simple: clear intersections so drivers, pedestrians, and people on bikes can actually see each other. It saves lives.

Today, over a million New Yorkers will ride the slowest buses in the nation, with an average speed of only 8 mph.

As a candidate, Zohran Mamdani committed to making buses fast and free. As mayor, there is so much he can do to make buses frequent, reliable, and pleasant.

When Mayor Zohran Mamdani takes office in January, he’ll suddenly control over 6,300 miles of streets and nearly 50,000 intersections. He’ll have authority over our city’s largest public space, and a mandate to transform it.

"Staff at Transportation Alternatives told amNewYork that they 'crunched the numbers' and found that Citi Bike rides are becoming more abundant, even surging in areas traditionally considered 'transit deserts' with limited public transportation options."

Year-Round Outdoor Dining works — for small businesses, for neighborhoods, and for New Yorkers. But outdated rules are holding us back.

Intros 1421 + 1446 would make the Open Dining program year-round and easier to access.

"'Stop playing political games with children's lives,' said Elizabeth Adams, deputy director of Transportation Alternatives. 'We’re disappointed and angry that the City Council is working to water-down a critical, lifesaving bill.'"
NEW: NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and City Hall are colluding to kill a long-awaited bill to ban parking near all intersections for better visibility — a dramatic, lame-duck gambit that street safety advocates blasted as an egregious form of political gamesmanship. buff.ly/1wcrEWr

"Katuala, who describes himself as a 'fairly optimistic person,' makes the pessimistic case against the Adams administration's crackdown.

'What really pisses me off is that actual safety issues like double-parked cars and cars parked in the bike lane ... are simply ignored.'"
We're so happy to present the Streetsblog debut of YouTuber Joel Katuala, who has a video lambasting Mayor Adams — and, by extension, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch (who will stay in office) — for the criminal crackdown that began on cyclists that began this spring.

Why have we waited more than four years to fix Fifth Avenue? DOT's 2021 plan would create a complete street that works for everyone.

Could the holdup have something to do with "'one of New York City’s most powerful real estate developers,' in the words of the New York Times."?
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani should revive the DOT's plan to breathe life into Fifth Avenue with wider sidewalks, a protected bike lane, and a dedicated busway — which Mayors de Blasio and Adams shelved at the behest of powerful business interests.

Stuck in traffic today?

As part of the congestion pricing legislation, New York has the power to free the zone of traffic jams during Gridlock Alert Days by dynamically increasing the congestion pricing fee by 25%.

But Governor Hochul directed the MTA *not* to use this power.

As last mile delivery continues to expand, New York must ensure that our streets and workers are safe for everyone. This looks like expanding the commercial cargo bike program, increasing neighborhood loading zones, and expanding smart curbs.
Our new report found significant increases in traffic crashes, worker injuries & pollution in areas surrounding #LastMile facilities – neighborhoods which have higher concentrations of Black and Latine New Yorkers.
