#NationalPotholeDay
It's National Pothole Day ❗ 🚩

We can all agree potholes suck. But not all drivers are equal culprits - a 2 tonne SUV causes up to 16 times as much road damage as a 1 tonne car.

That's why @transenvuk.bsky.social want a Large Vehicle Levy to fairly charge SUV users for their impact on our roads.

A clear policy signal through a ZEV mandate would turn this consultation into genuine momentum giving industry the certainty to invest, drive innovation, and ensure the UK leads in the global race toward zero-emission freight.

💡 The £18 million top-up to the Plug-in Truck Grant is a welcome move, helping more operators make the shift and realise the cost and environmental benefits of electric transport.
January 7, 2026 at 10:23 AM
🚫 The Government must avoid distractions from ineffective alternatives.
Crop-based biofuels and synthetic fuels are costly, scarce, and often higher-emitting. The policy focus should remain squarely on electrification, the most efficient and affordable route to zero-emission freight.

➡️ Support domestic production of zero-emission HGVs.
➡️Drive down vehicle costs through economies of scale.
Without it, the UK risks falling behind European markets, where electric trucks already hold far greater market share.
January 7, 2026 at 10:23 AM
⚙️ Next step: a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate for trucks.
This measure, modelled on the successful car and van scheme, would:
➡️ Unlock long-term investment in UK manufacturing and supply chains.
January 7, 2026 at 10:23 AM
Electric trucks are already a proven, scalable solution trusted by operators like Amazon and Welch Group and fast becoming the most economical option for many duty cycles.
January 7, 2026 at 10:22 AM
📅 Phasing out polluting trucks by 2040 is essential to meeting the UK’s climate targets and improving air quality for communities nationwide.

🚛 The UK’s HGV decarbonisation journey is gaining momentum.

The government's long-awaited consultation on decarbonising HGVs marks another crucial step towards a cleaner, greener, and increasingly cost-competitive freight sector.

"The UK must stand firm. Our ZEV mandate is already driving jobs, investment and innovation into the UK. As major exporters we cannot compete unless we innovate, and global markets are going electric fast," said T&E UK's director Anna Krajinska.

EU waters down plans to end new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035
Carmakers, particularly in Germany, have lobbied heavily for concessions to the planned rules.

🌍 With bold action now, the UK can lead the world in maritime sustainability, supporting green industry, creating good jobs, and delivering on the Chancellor’s vision for a cleaner, more competitive economy in 2026.

⚡ The solution is ready: mandating onshore power supply and fast-tracking grid connections at UK ports can dramatically cut emissions by allowing ships to plug into clean electricity while docked.

🚢 Together with Opportunity Green, we’re urging Keir Mather MP to put in place clear regulations ensuring cruise growth aligns with the UK’s shipping decarbonisation goals.
December 9, 2025 at 10:30 AM
👥 These figures show how unevenly the health and environmental burdens of cruise pollution fall, often on communities who see little of the economic benefits.
December 9, 2025 at 10:30 AM
Some smaller Scottish coastal towns experience 25 to 130 times more SOx emissions from cruise ships than from local cars.
December 9, 2025 at 10:29 AM
In Southampton, just 46 cruise ships account for over half of all nitrogen oxide (NOx) and PM2.5 emissions — pollutants linked to respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
December 9, 2025 at 10:29 AM
⚠️ Cruise pollution reality check:

Cruise ships dominate air pollution at the UK’s busiest ports, responsible for up to 96% of sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions.
December 9, 2025 at 10:28 AM
But while it promises investment and tourism growth, there’s a major gap: it fails to set out how the Government will tackle the air pollution that comes with cruise expansion, or how coastal communities will be genuinely involved in shaping it.
December 9, 2025 at 10:28 AM
🌊 Cruise growth must not come at the cost of clean air and healthy communities.

The UK Government’s cruise growth plan, launched in September, aims to boost coastal economies -touted as worth £5.8 billion a year and supporting 60,000 jobs.

🚨 To make the PPM policy fair it is crucial that the government taxes PHEVs based on their real world emissions not unrealistic theoretical numbers. Otherwise the Government risks another dieselgate style scandal.
