⚡️ Public funds should prioritise smart electrification, efficiency and truly sustainable alternatives.

Using just 3% of this land for solar would produce the same amount of energy.

⚡️Not increasing the amount of biofuels burnt in cars and trucks and instead focusing on driving forward the EV transition which delivers guaranteed emission cuts

⚡️ Not allowing crop based biofuels within the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate which will further accelerate biofuel use and fail to cut aviation’s huge emissions Public funds should prioritise smart electrification, efficiency and truly sustainable alternatives.

Brazil is one of the fastest growing producers and is catching up with the US – the world's biggest biofuels producer.

Governments must put in place better safeguards against biofuels that contribute to land clearance and deforestation when making climate policies. In the UK this means:
transenvuk.bsky.social
Biofuels are a bad climate solution and a huge waste of land, food and millions in subsidies. Burning crops for fuel only pushes us further away from our climate goals.

But biofuel production is only growing across the planet.
transenvuk.bsky.social
By 2030, biofuels are projected to emit 70 MtCO2e more than the fossil fuels they replace. That’s the same as the emissions from almost 30 million diesel cars.

Today, the equivalent of 100mn bottles of vegetable oil are burned in cars every day, meaning a fifth of all vegetable oil is never even used for food.

By 2030, biofuels crops will require land the size of France, which would make it the sixth largest country in terms of arable land use globally.

NEW: Biofuels globally emit more than the fossil fuels they replace, our latest study shows.

The first-of-a-kind study looks at global biofuels production today and the potential impacts of government biofuel targets.

🛫 This week the Government approved expansion of Gatwick Airport a move that will skyrocket demand for clean tech to tackle aviation emissions.

Let’s build Britain’s clean aviation future before expanding its carbon footprint! 🌍✈️

✈️💭 Did you know the clouds made by planes can warm our planet as much as all aviation’s CO₂ emissions?

As Europe ramps up biofuels use, there is a growing risk that fraudulently mislabelled “waste” products will act as a backdoor for deforestation-driving palm oil.

Check out our report from earlier this year👇

Palm oil in disguise?
How recent import trends of palm residues raise concerns over a key feedstock for biofuels
www.transportenvironment.org

According to Quantum Commodities Intelligence, from January to October 2024, POME and high acid palm oil residue exports reached 3.45 mn metric tonnes. This export volume was greater than crude palm oil exports during the same period, which were only 2.70 mn mt.

Five months on and the Indonesian government’s special crimes unit have launched a formal probe into exports of waste biofuel feedstock palm oil mill effluent following a surge in palm oil and palm derivative exports between 2022 and 2024.

Latest: Indonesia launches a probe into POME exports following concerns over fraud.

Earlier this year T&E published data showing Indonesia was exporting more POME (a palm oil byproduct) to the EU than it could realistically collect - a major sign of fraud.

The U.K. isn’t using its tax regime to disincentivise SUV purchases.

A UK driver pays just £3200 acquisition tax on an £85k car, compared to *£66k* in France!!

As a result, 4x as many are sold here in the U.K. than France.

Interesting policy suggestion from @transenvuk.bsky.social - Large Vehicle Levy, where cars are charged £10 per kg over 1600kg in weight (with a 400kg allowance for EVs).

Suggest it would raise £2 billion for the Treasury.
transenvuk.bsky.social
Hi Barbara - the 'Large Vehicle Levy' would include a 400kg additional weight allowance for BEVs, to fairly accommodate for additional mass of batteries, ensuring that the transition to electric is not penalised.
