Some exuberant body rolls in Zumba class aren't really the reason either, just the trigger. May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month. Ehlers-Danlos is the reason I've been spending a lot of quality time with my heating pad.

Luckily, I've found people and resources to support my journey forward. I'm learning how to better manage flares when they happen, like today, how to recognize potential triggers, and how to support my health to minimize the frequency and severity of flares.

Getting the diagnosis last year was interesting...I finally knew why my body hurt all of the time, yay! But I also know now the cause of all the hurting is not going away. hEDS and its 12 siblings have no cure.

Being hypermobile means my joints have greater-than-average range of motion. Great for a dancer! Except it also comes with joint pain & instability. I usually have a headache the day after dance due to neck instability. My back is currently healing from body rolls in Zumba. 😅

Last year, I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. hEDS is a genetic disorder that makes connective tissue like ligaments and tendons more lax. I think of it as my Scarecrow genes.

I am Katie, a.k.a. The Girl with the Tree Tattoo. I competed in ballroom dancing for years and even won a World Champion title. After moving to Maine in 2021, I began focusing on other dance styles like ballet, tap & west coast swing. I miss Waltz the most from those ballroom days.
