🧵 The NEW #TrekRewatch5 episode grading system:

A 0-5 scale, with a potential point awarded in response to five yes/no questions, designed to drive at what I love most about #StarTrek.

Firm Yes = 1 pt
Firm No = 0 pt
In between = 0.5 pt

Those questions are outlined in this thread:

I really love the Data/Worf command structure struggles as well! That's most prominently a feature of Part II, and it's excellent.

These two #StarTrek episodes aired the week of October 10, 1993.

Which do you prefer?

🔵 "Gambit, Part I"
🔴 "The Siege"
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"Gambit, Part I" is an entertaining romp, finding a satisfying balance of high-stakes thriller notes with a light on its feet and brisk tone. The guest cast populating the mercenary crew brings key added value, completely selling the tenuous loyalties core to this story.

Score: 3.5/5
#TrekRewatch5

"The Siege" doesn't carry the same weight as the first two parts of this story, but it's full of well executed action and strong character beats. The conclusion doesn't offer any major surprises or venture outside the box, but it's a satisfying wrap-up to a great trilogy.

Score: 3.5/5

Which do you prefer?

🔵 "Interface"
🔴 "The Circle"
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"Interface" has the makings of a good story, offering a chance to explore Geordi's relationship with his parents, his background and to put him through an emotional ringer. Unfortunately, the dramatic keynotes don't land their punches, and the mystery doesn't deliver.

Score: 1.5/5
#TrekRewatch5
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"The Circle" is jam-packed with well plotted Bajoran political intrigue, and the guest cast provides a load of heightened gravitas. This three-part story announces #DS9's arrival as a series focused on the big picture of its own story and confirms the show's unique voice.

Score: 4.0/5

Which do you prefer?

🔵 "Liaisons"
🔴 "The Homecoming"
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"Liaisons" contains a fairly effective twist, with a solidly (if predictably) #StarTrek resolution, but the bulk of this is paint by numbers and uninspired fare. The characters are dialed into a fun and reliably watchable mode, but their charm can't quite carry the day.

Score: 2.0/5
#TrekRewatch5
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"The Homecoming", along with the last two episodes of the first season, have established a nuanced, rich tapestry of world building which collectively lock #DS9 into a comfort zone. The prison break action-heavy set piece is great, and the character work is sharply drawn.

Score: 4.0/5
#TrekRewatch5
trekfan4387.bsky.social
"Descent, Part II" is more jagged edged and sprawling than its first half. The various storylines are executed with mixed results, while Brent Spiner delivers his reliably great work and Gates McFadden is also strong here. The episode's finale comes together too easily.

Score: 2.5/5

I also don't think Discovery S5 impacted the scoring at all. Those elements are reflected in the "Big Picture Impact" category, and I think I would have awarded a full point there even a few years ago. However, it goes without saying that there's certainly some added value here post #DSC S5.
trekfan4387.bsky.social
Good question! Discovery's fifth season didn't contribute to the episode's dropping a few slots, as I love that season. I think some other episode's ascensions (Second Chances, Relics most notably) just forced some others down.

Ahh see I REALLY struggle with the slow-mo, very 90’s execution of the action finale. I’ve never been fond of that and it holds it back a smidge for me.

#NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
