Why the Maasai spit on newborns, brides and visitors for blessing
The Maasai of Kenya and northern Tanzania are known across the world for their rich heritage, striking visual identity and centuries-old cultural traditions. Yet among their many practices, one stands out as both surprising and deeply symbolic. In a world where spitting is usually seen as rude or disrespectful, the Maasai view it as a gesture of goodwill, blessing and profound respect. Although the Maasai make up less than 1 percent of the population in their region, their influence on East African culture and global anthropology remains strong. Their vibrant red garments, known as Shuka, and their intricate beaded jewelry have become iconic.

Zi returns with honesty and heart on her debut EP Echoes of Zi
Three years after her breakout single Freefalling in 2022, Nigerian singer-songwriter Zi has returned — not with noise, but with quiet conviction. Her new EP, Echoes of Zi, is more than a collection of songs. It’s a reintroduction to an artist who stepped away from the spotlight to rediscover her purpose. Zi’s absence wasn’t accidental. “Sometimes silence isn’t absence; it’s preparation,” she says. Those three years were spent questioning, healing, and rebuilding her relationship with music. The result is an intimate project that reflects every phase of that journey — from vulnerability and exhaustion to joy, faith, and love.
