When I was 17 I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer with the National Weather Service. I went in with a big interest in weather and left with a lifelong appreciation of a life-saving service that everyone in the US enjoys.

AI has been good for at least one thing: I am now extremely aware that my appreciation for any piece of art really boils down to a steadily-growing, almost sneaky amazement that a human really did create something beautiful.

We live in an era of actual comic book villains. It’s as if the folks who today find themselves uber wealthy and successful seek to embody the antagonists they read about 50 years ago. They are living caricatures of a caricature.

Introducing, our latest handmade typeface, Dragönsteel. Inspired by heavy metal logos, 1980s role-playing games, and maybe dragons and dusty, leather-bound books, Dragönsteel is our take on a modern-ish blackletter typeface.

Intuit laid off 1,800 employees today in what, I guess, could be described as a sacrificial offering to AI? I don’t know. But their apparently tactless CEO begins the layoffs announcement email with TWO AND A HALF PARAGRAPHS of AI-centric fluff before even saying there is a layoff.

Disgusting.

The USPS is honoring longtime Jeopardy host Alex Trebek with a stamp that cleverly mimics a blue Jeopardy answer — and the whole sheet of stamps looks like the game board. [kottke.org]
