i didn't go up enough grades to be challenged academically (until getting to college with 0 study habits), but i did go up enough to be the kid younger than everyone else. like you say, no good answer. parallel paths of social/academic development eventually runs out of runway

they bumped me up a grade in elementary school and it was probably net negative overall. i still wasn't challenged in school (until college where i got flattened by having no study habits), and got all the drawbacks of being a year younger (again, until college, where i could lie about my age)
