When we replace these cells or the factors they make, T cell production recovers.The thymus turns out to be more than just its epithelial cells.

Thymic mesenchymal cells produce key factors that attract and organize T cell progenitors. Lose the mesenchyme — through aging or damage — and T cell output drops.
