Just put the same amount of seasoning on the flavors yoy have now as they had in the 1980s. Love the retro flavors.
I look forward to seeing some new Tunnels & Trolls. Will this be an update to the previous v7 rules or a more distinct derivative or cut from whole cloth?
Wish there was a print of this currently available. #odnd #art #dnd #osr #bxdnd
62) Daredevils by Fantasy Games Unlimited. Evocative of pulp age stories. Art is pleasing. Rules not designed to modern standards like many FGU games. Probably some ideas that could be used in a Pulp Cthulhu campaign. #pulpfiction #ttrpg #pulprpg #daredevils #pulpcthulhu #docsavage #theshadow #FGU
Arcane guns are way more acceptable to me in a fantasy setting. They have an inherent mystical weakness which is relatable versus being throttled by the industrial level of again a fantasy setting. We aren't supposed to be thinking of the Iron mining and steel production rates. #ttrpg
We are talking about players' desire to have ready availability to guns like it's the wild west, but also have an expectation that other people don't have the same access.
If you are using historical parallels, then vagabond heroes would not have guns. If they did get a gun, then they would be impractical due to the needs of gunpowder and functionally too long reload times. We are talking about fantasy murder machines in a world with magic and gods that walk the earth
For the same reason why the PCs would have them - they are a more effective way of killing in the highly dangerous and violent world that Fantasy RPGs are set in. Hmm, more effective than other weapons every power that can will set to making guns. Ergo guns will be everywhere. #ttrpg #osr #fantasy
The thing about players that want guns in fantasy is that everyone would have guns, not just the PCs trying to live out their Dawn of the Dead shooting dream. If a player wants to feel special killing NPCs, what's wrong with a fantasy appropriate weapon? #ttrpg #nogunfantasy #fantasy #dnd #osr
I am excited to see a new book for the old ways. Pirates - one of the most popular spacer occupational choices. Yo ho and a container of algae brew.
61) Avengers of Justice. A Superhero RPG by Better Games.
A folder that contains multiple booklets and forms. Separate books for running heroes and villains. Includes a book on comic book scenario design which is worthwhile. B&W indie style art #ttrpg #comicbooks #superherorpg #avengersofjustice
60) Critter Commandos. Ridiculous miniatures wargame based on cartoon characters fighting. Eventually had some role-playing rules included. It's no Toon, of course. Met him at Waterloo Games, which was the only store ever like that in the local area - sadly gone now #ToonRPG #ttrpg #cartoons #games
59) Living Steel. A Sci-Fi game using a simplified version of the Phoenix Command ruleset. Combat is apparently very slow. Talked a big game world building wise but was pretty narrow in actual support. We talked about playing back in the day, but alas we never did. #ttrpg #tabletopgaming #scifi
Never too late for a game of Traveller! As others said, characters are not likely to die in character generation in modern versions. That was just a bonus game within a game to start out with. Great when you have a lot of time between sessions. #Traveller #TravellerRPG #osr #ttrpg #ttrpgsky
Pixies as a player character race is particularly interesting as that is a small flying(!) race - imagine the possibilities - requires a brave GM. Centaurs as PC choice is even more interesting as that requires full role-playing commitment by a brave player due to those equine challenges #ttrpg #osr
I have that RPG - never saw the miniatures though.
The game had an adventure location, which had a Smaug type dragon. It does not have stats because if you fight it, it's not going to go well. But you can bargain with it as it is working a toll collecting gatekeeper to a series of tombs, etc. The dragon is a hypochondriac, so you can use that lever
It had rules for bribing judges and actual punishments delineated such as going to work in a workcamp/mine. Something rarely seen in a fantasy ttrpg. Also covered a lot of different types of financial crimes your PCs could engage in (surprisingly left some common one out though as I recall).
Things they did different was to have a lot of player character races not seen elsewhere such as Centaurs, Pixies, Kobolds, Goblins. Different, more granular attributes. The thieves role is vastly expanded with so many options for skill adjustment. Crime & punishment fleshed out in a realistic mode.
One of my first ttrpgs that I got was Thieves' Guild and it did so many things before and or better than many games after it. It is just disappointing that the company never got to publish the fighter component, Naked Sword or the wizard section, Paths of Sorcery #ttrpg #osr #thievesguild #gamelords
Watching the animated Hobbit reminds that there was definitely a need for a longer movie version of the story, but almost certainly not as long as the 3 part version. I mean, I love the story, and the animated one gets the spirit of it but is too abbreviated. #jrrtolkien #thehobbit #LOTR #books
Or it's all held on together by a tenuous magical tether that can and should be rendered by such wandering robbers/bold heroes that come across them. Some low magic settings make it difficult to create such persistent magics yet rely on them for their narrative. Please don't. #osr #dnd #ttrpg #nsr
I think that sort of thing requires advanced engineering getting to the superscience level which is alright for a Dying Earth/Numenera/UVG/etc. setting. A straight fantasy setting requires an earlier civilization to be so much more advanced scientifically and magically to justify such works.
When a story has a location with a trap or device that is still functional after hundreds of years, that puts me to mind that the materials used must be corrosion proof and be overengineered to the point of not being affected by settling, moisture, fatigue, bugs in the works. #worldbuilding #ttrpg
I know the best any competitor has likely gotten is more in the sub 1% category. But a gamer can dream that One Page Rules (which is really the most accessible and supported in that space) could carry the day but it is a hard ask to convince people that the vast time sunk into GW should be cast off.
