"One way or another," I say to my wife, "all bleeding stops eventually."

"I'm not sure you appreciate how much blood is actually in the human body," she replies.

Pretty sure marathons are a violation of the Geneva Convention, though. Cruel and unusual punishment, torture, etc.

Horrible, horrible images from Portland:

It was a beautiful Sunday in Portland. Farmer’s markets, the Portland Marathon, peaceful protests, and some views of Mt. Hood. This city is vibrant, peaceful, and resilient. We do not need a federal occupation, and we sure as hell don’t want one.

YouTubers of 80's cartoon nostalgia sometimes seem caught between a disregard for Ronald Reagan and deregulation but the beloved cartoon they're talking about being something that wouldn't exist without Ronald Reagan's deregulation of children's programming.

I think Weiss has a decent chance of success in terms of viewership and viability, compared to the alternatives. That's all.

Regarding editorial ground, if you don't see the difference between Bari Weiss and Viacom's CBS News and ABC News, I think our perspectives here irreconcilably differ.

When I refer to the pick as defensible, I am referring to it being defensible from S/P's point of view. I am not offering commentary on whether the pick is likely to lead to a good product or bad product from my (or anyone else's specifically) point of view. CBS isn't concerned about that.

Pete might be of very few politicians were journalists digging deep into the past find "secrets" that make him look better rather than worse.

a thing I like to remember from time to time about Buttigieg, that I think is relevant though not dispositive about his willingness to fight, is why Nicole Cliffe donated to his campaign

If it's a longshot enough race, sometimes you just want a name on the ballot. But you should fundraise accordingly.

McGrath running again not an issue, the money she's going to siphon from other campaigns is.

Is there somebody else that would have been better in this role? Maybe. No other names immediately come to mind, but I'm not really plugged in to that community.

It's an experiment, but network news is in such a place that experimentation is a good idea (though not at that price tag).

The defense is (a) they've already alienated the people this would alienate, and (b) staking out their own editorial ground could work out for them. I would say has a better chance than a lot of the alternatives. (A) limits the downside, (B) is potential upside.
trumwill.bsky.social
I'm not sure they're alienating anyone they hadn't already alienated out of previous decisions of necessity.

Maybe it works out well, maybe it'll go back to the drawing board. So I wouldn't say I agree with it, but I do think it is, as I said, defensible.
trumwill.bsky.social
Not the decision I would have made (I probably would have sought a partnership with the WP or NYT), time will tell, and so on. But staking out their own editorial space is definitely something I would have considered and...

TBH I don't even think that was the most objectionable decision (the lawsuit settlement was) but to the extent that it was driven by appeasing Trump, that was clearly in the company's best interest (for the Paramount side, critical to survival).
trumwill.bsky.social
Their job was to survive, and they survived. I might have resigned or stepped aside over decisions they made, but there's no question to my mind that it was the right decision to make for the company itself.

Can't speak for Idaho, but we're on the ACA market and it's always been 11/1 (which is also what heathcare-dot-gov says)

(Of course, Skydance/Paramount is like two days old, though Paramount was still above-average before the acquisition. They were just dealing with a crappy hand.)

First big one, anyway. Maybe I'm grading on top generous a curve but by and large I'm more bullish on their leadership and seeing better decisionmaking right now than WBD and Comcast for example.

I think the acquisition is highly defensible but the price point is not.

It's the first bad decision I think I've seen them make.
