Another #pokemon #oc commission! Lam Logan is a flying specialist & gym leader. Recently he befriended the legendary Virizion. It was fun to go all in on the citrus-palette for this one 😆

A young man with green hair and green eyes dressed in a big yellow sweatshirt and black athletic pants stands next to the legendary Pokémon Virizion. On the man’s shoulder is an adorable Pidove. The man holds a Pokeball and smiles happily.

#PlotTober Day 12: Well, there are two opposing secret societies that all the main characters inevitably end up crossing paths with. Though one has an arguably “better” goal for the realm than the other, both get in the way of the MCs’ personal goals!

12. What could you use to represent obstacles that try to stop the main character(s) from achieving their goals and from growing into the person they could potentially be? Consider other characters, forces of nature, difficult circumstances, etc.

Livia carries a lot of assumptions about marriage that need to evolve based on context. She assumes being married will weaken her position & make her life boring; on the contrary, it can strengthen it, and provide adventure - especially once she realizes the nature of who she married.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
On the contrary, Andi has a lot of room to grow into someone who isn’t focused 110% on her own ambition 24/7. She could use some people in her life she actually cares about, and can put before herself. Luckily, the story provided that for her, too.

#PlotTober Day 11: Lou has a lot of potential to change into someone more ambitious & motivated than she currently is. She’s been without a driving passion for most of her young adult life, never taking anything very seriously. She needs a wake up call about that - which the story ends up providing!

11. What are some possible ways your main character(s) could grow and change over the course of the story? On the other hand, what are some ways their growth could be hindered?

Fantastic thread that made me stop and think hard about how I, an artist, talk about myself & my art. Admittedly, I’m often more negative than positive. That changes today. I hate AI, but that aside, I want to contribute to making others feel excited about creativity vs the opposite.

in a session with my therapist, she was commenting how she can't draw a stick figure -- then recalled a time when she could envision exactly what she wanted and it came out easily on the canvas. and she had no idea how she did it.

I was like, yeah, the flow state. you know, like athletes and gamers

Andi’s family is very controlling, conservative, and strict. Her exile was because of her refusal to conform to their ways. Livia was forced into an arranged marriage, and there was always a lot of pressure on her to marry well for her noble family.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
#PlotTober: Lou’s mother died when she was a child, so that loss definitely shaped her current personality. Lou’s backstory also involves the realties of being a commoner in a harsh high fantasy world vs what some of the more wealthy/noble characters have experienced.

10. What are some potential backstory or contextual reasons for your main character(s) having this kind of personality or behaving this way? In other words, what could have caused them to be the person they are at the start of your WIP?

Livia wears her heart on her sleeve. She’s naturally rebellious, but as the story continues, her political savvy really becomes her main personality highlight. Charming, genuinely compassionate, and very insightful. She also eventually makes a great mother!
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
Andi’s a complete bitch. Like, 100%. Prideful, spiteful, and ambitious (often to her own detriment!), but also incredibly clever and confident. She’s gorgeous and charismatic, and actually a very capable leader! Once she matures a bit and stops only caring about herself (well…for the most past 😆)
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
#PlotTober Day 9: Lou is initially pretty lazy, content to coast by on her father’s farm. Deep down, though, there’s a fierce protectiveness (especially for family) & a desire to prove herself. She is a character that “hardens” during the story. I really want her to be a total badass by the end!

Of course, it gets quite difficult to accomplish your own personal goals when two secret societies BOTH start taking interest in your magical talking sword 😆
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
#PlotTober Day 8: Lou’s first goal of getting rid of the magical talking sword gets quickly side-tracked when she realizes she can’t be parted from it! She inadvertently formed a blood pact with it, and will need to seek more advanced magical expertise to figure out how to break something like that.

8. What are some potential reasons the main character(s) haven't, couldn't, and/or can't pursue these goals yet? Consider other characters, backstory events, circumstances, environmental factors, etc.

Andi’s spite could power an entire city 😆
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
Lou's goal shifts a bit earlier than the other two main characters; the catalyst for her embracing her pact with Evagoras (the soul of the swordsman inhabiting the sword) becomes a major focus in the second arc of the overall story.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
Livia wants to escape the arranged marriage she's been forced into because she initially believes it will take away all of her autonomy and freedom. She wants to make her own choices, and have her own adventures, not play house with some man she barely knows...
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
Andi wants power because of her own pride. She wants to prove her family wrong, and show that her exile wasn't a detriment, but a boon. She doesn't want to bend to their expectations: being successful on her own is a huge part of how she deals with her feelings about them.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
#PlotTober Day 7: Well, Lou's original goal of getting rid of the weird sword she found has a little to do with protecting her family from potentially dangerous magic and a little to do with her own aversion to responsibility.

7. Now that you've come up with some goals for your main character, ask yourself: why do they care? What are some potential motivations for pursuing these goals, even against their better judgment or self-interest?

I gave up on Inktober so early this year, but that’s just the reality of living with depression. A sudden storm comes on and ruins all your plans. But it’s ok - I’ve got plenty of art I want to do this month, just maybe not the daily pressures of that sort of challenge 😅
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
As for Andi, she wants power! And she refuses to become what her family wants her to be (even if it means exile). Livia wants to escape the arranged marriage she’s been forced into, and gain back her autonomy. Both of their goals evolve, as well, as the story continues.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
As you might expect, things aren’t so easy. Lou & the sword, called Bloodfury, have formed an unexpected blood pact. Her goal evolves as the story continues
- and she matures - until she realizes she actually wants to inherit the legacy of the swordsman who’s soul has been trapped within the sword.

#PlotTober Day 6: Lou had no real goals until she stumbled upon a magical talking sword. At the start of my WIP, she wants to get rid of the thing, so she takes it to Arascain, the capital of the nation she lives in where she can hopefully hand it off to the wizard tower there and be done with it…

6. Main characters are driven by actionable goals, but not every goal is created equal. For your MC, they should be specific, tangible, personal, achievable, and urgent. Can you think of some goals for your MC that meet this criteria?

Remember: Use the #PlotTober hashtag, engage with others, and have fun!

All three are relatively young women - in their early twenties (by human & elf standards, meaning Andi is technically older than the other two but mentally around the same age).
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
And finally, we have Livia! She’s a noblewoman who’s family recently married her off (against her will) to the Duke of Arascain and must navigate her new role as his wife and the mistress of his estate.
tryhardmushroom.bsky.social
The second main character is Andraste (“Andi” for short), a prideful young elf who’s been exiled from her homeland. She seeks power, specifically of a necromantic nature…
