Hello Bluesky! We're a small community heritage group on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border. We started our journey looking for the #Tudor roots of the farm but we're now looking at #Saxon and beyond! We are keen to hear from you about all things #medievalsky #farming and #environment in #history!

Quaternary people, I need to source a high-resolution graphics file of an up-to-date Marine Isotope curve? One I can use at two different resolution, one 1,000,000 to present, the other 100,000 to present. Any idea where to look? Has anything definitively replaced Railsback? 🦣

So, we're now starting to plan for the programme of OSL dating which will hopefully shed light (geddit? 😁) on the development of the field system here at Under Whitle in the Upper Dove Valley. We have pollen evidence from the 7th century CE, now we want to know where! #OSL #Archaeology #Environment

The last REF found that 98% of UK research was either "internationally recognised", "internationally excellent", or "world-leading". If you think low-quality research is the noteworthy challenge in UK higher ed right now, you are wilfully looking in the wrong direction

Research on the farm. continues, we have completed the Pollen Project and are now planning to use Optical Stimulation Luminescence to date some of the earthwork features such as lynchets and ridge & furrow to see if we can trace the growth of the field system here in the Middle Ages (600-1500 CE).

Analysis of the pollen from a peat bog on our site shows Walnut (Juglans regia) growing close-by from as early as the 7th century CE.

Henna is derived from Lawsonia inermis. The colorant is lawsone, a naphthoquinone, which is also found in the fruits of Juglans (#Juglandaceae). Henna has been used for hair dye & body decoration (mehndi, or henna tattoo) for centuries. #Lythraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Last Thursday we held a study day/workshop with a range of specialists about the project and the amazing results we have from the palynological analysis of a peat bog on the farm. We had historians, archaeologists and environmental specialists for the whole day and what a great exchange of ideas!
