Shine A Light (1972) buff.ly/tWcPwOz
Mick wrote this about Brian Jones
The song has a definite gospel influence
They've played it off/on live

Keith said none of his songs are autobiographical
He said some are a reaction to an emotion
He sometimes writes to continue a feeling
He wasn't happy when writing Happy but he was writing about being in that mindset
The title came from how he felt about the recorded results

Keith wrote and they recorded Happy in a single afternoon
He said it didn't exist at noon and by 4 pm it was written & recorded on tape

Happy (1972) buff.ly/tBKyM52
Keith is on lead vocals here
It's 1 of his signature songs
It was their 2nd single from 'Exile on Main Street'
They often play it live (they did when I saw them)

The band was sued after 'Exile On Main Street' was released because Sweet Virginia & 4 other songs were composed while Mick & Keith were still under contract with ABKCO Records.
The record company acquired publishing rights to those songs, which gave them royalty shares from the album

Sweet Virginia (1972) buff.ly/yorkdBE
This is a slow, country-western inspired song with a sax solo
Mick did a harmonica solo, too
The lyrics do have drug references

Mick got info about playing dice from talking to the housekeeper in LA so he could incorporate some of the gambling lingo in the lyrics for Tumbling Dice
The song took multiple takes (it's been estimated up to 150) to finish
This was a previous unfinished song they reworked and recorded

Tumbling Dice (1972) buff.ly/mArM4UM
This was released worldwise as the lead single from 'Exile on Main Street'
The lyrical structure is irregular
It's about a gambler who cannot remain loyal to one woman
It has a blues-influenced rhythm

Rocks Off was partially recorded at the house in France that Keith rented and partially in Los Angeles
The basement where they recorded was extremely hot so the guitars didn't stay in tune
The electronic distortion of Mick's voice & the instruments gave the song a psychedelic sound

Rocks Off (1972) buff.ly/py5co6N
The subjective dissociation lyrics suggest drug use
They also used the 'F' word which was unusual for the early 70s in lyrics
This is on the band's 'Exile on Main St' album which was recorded when they moved to France because of their tax problems

Keith & Mick Taylor used honky-tonk lead guitar lines through Dead Flowers
Taylor did a guitar solo instead of a third verse

Dead Flowers (1971) buff.ly/WEPN8H1
This steps into country music territory
Mick allegedly received dead flowers from a fan so it inspired him to write this
The lyrics are dark and include drug references
The song narrator is down-on-his-luck which is a contrast to his ex lover

Bitch (1971) buff.ly/Dzvsqi2
This is the B-side of Brown Sugar
It's a hard rock song with a powerful Memphis-like horn arrangement
Mick Jagger & Mick Taylor had been jamming but it didn't sound good
Keith finally arrived & turned their loose jam into the trademark riff on the song

The band performed Can't You Hear Me Knocking live in 1971 but it was 30 years before they performed it live again

The band kept the impromptu jam that was recorded at the end of Can't You Hear Me Knocking
It's ranked at 25/100 of the greatest guitar songs of all time
The notes in the bridge were high for Mick to sing & he didn't do well so he did a lot of harmonies to hide his flawed performance
