We also took a class, tried out an incredibly expensive sewing machine, bought some patterns, notions and fabric, learned how to repair/conserve a damaged quilt I recently inherited, talked to lots of people about our shared obsession, and entered several raffles. 10/10, would recommend.

A color pallet, a size and a theme, and you end up with dozens of amazing octopuses, angler fish, divers, coral and etc. So impressive en mass! Amazing how a theme and color way can make a cohesive whole out of so many different interpretations.

I have to stop! I just keep remembering cool shit!

This was my first quilting convention and I was amazed. I was not prepared for how extensive the show part was. We eventually just couldn't absorb any more art. So wonderful. There are about 500 other quilts I could mention -ah! The deep sea thing!

There were also painful quilts by survivors of the Syrian civil war and refugees from Congo and Cambodia, and they were VERY hard. Scenes of beheadings, rape, ethnic cleansing and more. They are a powerful witness to these people's experience and, I hope, a way for them to work through their trauma.

The Taiwanese quilters were amazing and so prolific! There was a quilt by Japanese person that was lovely and mentioned that it was inspired by rainy days and that she just hoped it would be seen by people and bring them joy and it did! It was wonderful!

The group that reproduced a Harriet Powers story quilt and then had members reinterpret a block each in their own way, and provided a member to educate us about them was just so amazing, both for the quilts and for having a member teach us, rather than just the written statements.

There are so many other amazing quilts that I didn't think to take pictures of. The quilt by the Polish guild that used a religious mural are is inspiration - the way it looked perfect from a distance, but as you got close you realized that the blocks were done in different methods/ styles.

A more whimsical quilt, and one that made my friend and I laugh out loud!

Three Travelers in Search of a Vague Notion by Nikki Hill

Everything about this. The skill, the humor, the artistry, the sheer number of methods used. Absolutely charmed by this.
A circular quilt with a cherry image of a cat in a blue cape and jaunty matching cap holding up a telescope, looking to the viewers right. Behind him a purple crow is perched atop a grey/blue turtle. The turtle is facing the viewer, wearing glasses, and has one foot planted a simple, hand drawn map; he is wearing circular glasses and has goofy smile. The crow has a wind raised and pointed to the viewer's left, with his beak open as if to defend the path he's chosen.

Swooping up through the center of a black tree trunk with branches covered in multicolored appliqued leaves and bottoms; an embroidered vine climbs the trunk, with thimble leaves in shades of yellow, green and blue; overlapping the first boarder are flowers with sewing pins where stamens would be.

Surrounding this image is a thin, light brown boarder that has bumps at the compass points.

Outside this circular boarder is another, wider boarder in light tan. The compass points not marked North, Northeast, East, etc but rather; Thataway, Not a Clue, Hither, South? (In the southeast position), Thisaway, Yonder, Wrong!, and Northish (in the Northwest position). The directions are separated by a repeating image of a needle threaded with rainbow variegated thread.

*Apologies, but I can't swear to the methods used on each section of the quilt. It's possible the pincushion flowers are the origami element? I didn't even notice that until I was typing the methods list for the next image. And I don't even know what couching is 😮 Three Travelers in Search of a Vague Notion

Once upon a time, three bold tailors heard tales of a treasured land of button trees, thimble vines, and pincushion flowers. Seeking fame and fortune, they went on a long quest to find the fabled land. Unfortunately, they were all just a little clueless.

Wonderful quilt from the Houston International Quilt Festival.

Expecting Expectations by Karen Diane Morgan Guthrie.

I think it stood out to me because of reading Jessica Calarco's Holding it Together, especially where she talks about the myth of the Super Mom and how that burdens/blames women.
A quilt featuring a figure of a nude woman with light brown skin, her head thrown back and mouth wide open in a yell and her arm thrown up in frustrated gesture. In the lower left of the quilt is a gray cloud filled with eyes, all focused on the woman's pregnant belly. We are able to see a small, black, tadpole-like baby inside her belly. New and expecting mothers and their babies suffer a barrage of opinions and criticism. All the choices made by the parents are scrutinized and judged - along with the behavior of the child - often by their families and friends, who should be loving and supporting their choices. Being a parent is a mindbogglingly difficult task, lasting for decades. Wouldn't the world be a better place if we all just let parents choose for their family?

Maybe start with where you would have been normally scheduled to be? Just skip over those other days.

If you feel good after doing your daily cartoon, maybe work on a second, if not whatever, you're still back on track.

Good luck, I love your work 💜

What a devastating gardening emergency. Thank God for our brave guardsmen, sacrificing time from their families and jobs, to save DC from weeds. Surely, the most efficient and cost effective means of beautifying our capital.

Spy movies in general, but ... You want someone to move unnoticed through cities, bureaucracies or commercial areas? Get a fat woman. No one engages, no one remembers, no one questions. The idea that a hot person is necessary to gain access to organizations is just an excuse to write sex scenes.

A few more stats:

Nearly a third of the country's workforce—roughly 52 million people—earns under $15/hr.

12.1 million low-income tenants are now "severely cost burdened," spending at least half their income on rent.

About 50% of people in homeless shelters—and 40% of those unsheltered—have jobs.

I finally realized it's because I only watch streaming without ads. They need to advertise on social media or news sites, I guess. Radio/podcasts probably aren't the best medium for movie trailers, either...

Now our company gets to train at least 2 new RNs, at an average cost of 30k.

For those in hospital management - there are 2 reasons RNs stay: pay and the ability to get the schedule we want. If your "market adjustment" is $0.10/hr, then a messed up schedule is more than enough reason to leave.

My company just implemented an AI scheduling service created by Palantir. The roll out is going so well 2 people have already quit and several others are looking for new jobs. Also, this replaced zero jobs - our senior charge created the schedule before and she's still working.

In true public service fashion, the PBS Kids app is totally free. Hundreds of episodes free to stream - Daniel Tiger, Martha Speaks, Sesame Street and Arthur. Cool new stuff I've never heard of, it's all there!

Forests!! All the forests, all the moss, all the rivers. Our only temperate rainforest. The beach is nice, too, but not significantly different from beaches up and down the Oregon/Washington coasts.

But there's no wrong choice. Truly one of my favorite National Parks.

Horrific movie. Terrified me. Bawling in the theater. The hell they put that vacuum cleaner through. People talk about the Toy Story 3 scene with the furnace - they would have thrown up in this movie.

I'm excited for you! I've been following you since Twitter and Autostraddle, so I've heard how much you've had to overcome due to Long COVID - it's so cool you're able to ride! Freaking badass, what an inspiration 💜

I can still remember my Granny calling out all her granddaughters names, then giving up going "Hell, you know who you are." And our names were exactly nothing alike. None of those kids were ever called the right name until the moved out of the house.

So, something I learned when I cross trained in the PICU: hospitals are not allowed to give baby baskets, car seats or meals to parents. It's considered an illegal kickback that would influence parents' decisions about which hospital to use. Nothing says the city/county/state can't do it, though.

A hummingbird's heart beats 1,200 times a minute during the day. I like to imagine it just hums.
An iridescent Green and blue hummingbird approaches an yellow, cone shaped flower.

Ah, yes. Talking shit on social media, the classic example of direct communication.

No advice can help me, but I would love to see more of your threads here on Bluesky...

Thanks for promoting this shelter!
