For once, good news! The court has just ruled that the Apple encryption case involving the UK Government should not be held in secret. This transparency gives hope for a free society empowered by technology, in spite of the recent moves made by our government to compromise our privacy.

We’re calling for accountability from AI developers. If creators—especially self-published authors—never see compensation, then the promise of open libraries rings hollow—ethical licensing, open collaboration, and revenue-sharing need to be on the table.

We believe in a balanced approach: open knowledge shouldn’t mean undercutting creators. UK law allows text/data mining for non-commercial research, but for-profit use differs. Authors deserve recognition and a fair share when AI products profit from their work.

Tightening eligibility and forcing more frequent assessments will put lives and well-being at risk. Instead of punishing vulnerable people, we should be clamping down on tax evasion and fraud.

While HMRC lost an estimated £5.5bn to tax evasion in 2022-23 (and likely much more in reality accord to PAC), the government hell bent on saving £6bn by cutting support for those already struggling to make ends meet.
