A detached villa at Lisavon, East Belfast is found to have housed an extensive illicit distillery with two large stills, 160 gallons of poteen and numerous empty barrels being seized.

A fire breaks out at Sunbury Distillery, Leith.
Intriguingly this is caused by vapour igniting from spirit soaked wood that was being cut from one of the vats in order to satisfy new excise rules relating to their circumference and depth

The distillery buyers have made their first appearance of the season at Elgin grain market, purchasing a few small parcels of home barley.
The quality of the Danish barley however is 'excellent & cleaner than the bulk of the home stuff'.

Mr Alexander 'Sandy' Young retires after 48 and a half years with Mortlach Distillery. His colleagues presented him with "a Handsome armchair, pipe and tobacco pouch, and to Mrs Young a beautiful pouffe to match the chair."

The Phoenix Park Distillery closes down owing to the men refusing to handle coal unless brought in without police protection and union labour. The distillery will remain closed until assurances are given that operations can be resumed

The Aberdeen Press & Journal features an article on the exploits of Amber, the successor for the legendary Mouser of Glenturret Towser.
Having lived at the distillery for 14 years she has racked up a total of one catch and zero kills.

also loses a privilege since 1689 of making tax free whisky from its own barley. Subsequently most of it's skilled distillers depart; and with them any sort of distilling in the region.

Of course also remembered and it's lost lamented by Robert Burns.

The Wash Act comes into effect.
Instead of taxing low wines & spirits separately, fermented wash is taxed at 5d per gallon. Ferintosh (possibly Scotland's first whisky region, with at least four distilleries operating in the area) . .

Mr W. Edwards of Benrinnes distillery holds a ball in the grain loft of the site to thanks his employees, friends and villagers in assisting to extinguish a fire there at the start of the month.

His first Cupola roof construction was at Dailuaine, which sadly burnt down in 1917. There are 5 original Doig ventilators left, like the one pictured here at Annandale.

Charles C. Doig, architect and creator of the 'Doig Ventilator', passes away after falling ill whilst out on a shoot near Forres with his son, Alexander.
Mr Doig was professionally involved in 56 distilleries.

Thomas Rodgers, an apprentice cooper at Girvan is initiated by the master cooper.
After being placed in a cask he has helped to build, he is then covered in oil, feathers and sawdust before being rolled in the cask!
