Based on Home Office figures, we estimate the socio-economic cost of #modernslavery to the UK is £60bn.

To identify victims and effectively prevent this, we need to see the government taking leadership and doing more.

With no UK import controls on forced labour and opaque US supply chains, this deal could greenlight unethical goods.

And when supply chains are squeezed, exploitation follows.

"If you're pressing down on cost, time, and quality..you can only expect to be called out when forced labour is found."

The real issue? UK enforcement is broken.

Carter explains that the Home Secretary has to take an injunction...and only if a business keeps failing can a court fine them. But that process has never been used before.

"Prison labour can tip into modern slavery, where inmates really have no choice... and there's no means for them to refuse to do the work without receiving some kind of penalty."

That includes beef linked to prisons like Louisiana's Angola, where inmates reported being beaten for refusing to work—and paid with toilet paper or menstrual pads.
