My latest hand drawn Civil War map is of the Escambia River and Pensacola Bay, August 1864. I used two primary source maps to create this one. Dept of the Gulf Map No 47 and the 1857 A&F RR survey map. It is drawn 3/4 inch to a mile and is 18” by 48”. #usct #escambia #map #civilwar #pollard #penink

(Continued) …but the photographers in the studios often restricted business to white people only. Fifth, the overwhelming majority of Union officers were white. Sixth, There are quite a few photos of enlisted men from the 54th and 55th Mass, for example. Because of where they were mustered…
Fourth, the vast majority of portraits were done by private photographers who set up booths near sutlers. These were mostly with the Army of the Potomac, for example, and not any (known) in the Department of the Gulf. There were photographers with storefronts in places like New Orleans (continued)
Second, the ratio of white to black was significantly lower so that also had its impact. Third, the number of photographers assigned to to take photos by the War Department was higher in other departments rather than the Department of the Gulf where the majority of USCT were active. (More in next)
