ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

Just the tip of the iceberg on five months of reporting work. Huge shoutout to @lpangborn.bsky.social for all her ideas that sparked this project and her excellent column to come 👀
In October, statewide news reported that a sheriff's deputy in Texas searched thousands of Flock cameras in Washington for 'Had an abortion, search for female.’ New documents obtained by RANGE show Spokane County Sheriff's Office cameras were accessed in that search:

How to take alt transport to downtown if you don't know how:
- use the different mode options in Google maps to see real time bus routes and bike routes
- try your new transport mode on a low stakes and fun trip (ie brunch on a Saturday)
- start leveling up from there (ie using the bus for appts)
I feel like it’s getting lost that driving downtown is a *CHOICE.*

If you don’t want to pay a modest parking tax, don’t drive downtown! Take the bus! Walk! Bike! Take a scooter!
November 25, 2025 at 2:37 PM
I feel like i end up parking downtown about ~1x/ week on average but I don't know the last time I used a surface parking lot. (The last time I tried, I moved my car after I saw the price.) Street parking is usually plentiful and cheaper and won't get this tax!
Dana Harbaugh, a downtown business and property owner, is against the tax. Downtown is the heart of Spokane, he said, and when it falters, the consequences "ripple outwards." He thinks the tax will discourage tenants and consumers from choosing downtown. (There is an exemption for resident parking)

Council just decided to pass a new compromise amendment adopted as an emergency. That means the public will have to testify on a budget amendment they’ve never read.

So we’re tapping the sign 👇👇
Just realized I hit two years of covering local politics, specifically the Spokane City Council! Here’s a few things I’ve learned:

1. Everyone hates declaring an emergency to bypass the regular public process until it’s for a thing they personally like.

to be fair, capitalism in general is a ponzi scheme, so this tracks
You have to keep giving money to avoid collapse and if there’s collapse you have to give more money. It’s called the free market.

There's a billboard on my way home that is a giant photo of a hanging brutalized, nearly naked man and it strikes me how this imagery is totally fine in the public square bc of American evangelicalism.
Like we're cool with little kids seeing that violence bc there's a Bible verse next to it?

November 21, 2025 at 5:18 AM
its been a murky few weeks on the transparency front for city council and I'm not liking it.
If your boss was holding a public meeting about whether you should be laid off, would you want to know? Last week, Spokane City Council staffers weren’t given the option after they were kicked out of an unrecorded public meeting where their employment was discussed. Read the story now:

Every single day, municipal governments in our region make decisions that impact you. This week, the Spo City Council considers a new parking lot tax and banning algorithmic price fixing. In the county, the Airport Board is going to pay for a stormwater impacts study.

UPS announced 48,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $24M last year.

Intel announced 20,000 layoffs. Its new CEO's pay package is valued at nearly $69M.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

My latest for @rangemedia.co is an analysis of the ordinance

Surface parking lots
- aren’t housing
- don’t create jobs or culture
- pay almost no property tax
- ruin walkability
- are ugly
- attract crime
- send revenue out of our economy

So yes, let’s tax them out of existence.
An upcoming ordinance, if passed by city council, would tax surface and garage parking lots. Funds would go to transportation projects like street and sidewalk maintenance. The ordinance is scheduled for a final council reading on Nov. 17. Read more here:
Spokane City Council considers taxing commercial parking lots – RANGE Media
The tax would add about $0.50 to a $3.85 parking fee and fund street repair. But it’s not just about revenue, it’s about increasing vibrancy downtown.
