Cultural and linguistic responsiveness (CLR)
@validateaffirm.bsky.social
Cultural and Linguistic Responsiveness (CLR) is a way of being and a way of doing acceptance, sensitivity, understanding and awareness. Being CLR means the validation and affirmation of underserved students, families, and communities.
Orality and verbal expressiveness remind us that voice, body language, tone, and energy are powerful ways students show understanding and passion.

When we honor expressive communication through discussion, movement, and whole-group response, we create classrooms where more students can truly BEYOU.

Healthy classroom communities don’t just happen. They’re built through intentional routines, shared norms, and opportunities for students to learn with and from each other.

Ask yourself:
“How am I inviting students to learn together today?”
Small shifts build powerful communities.

Take notes - literally!

Dr. Hollie shows how simple classroom affirmations, chants, songs, poems, and ‘I am’ statements, can transform learning. Make positivity a regular part of your students’ day!

Mid-year reminder: Your students don’t need perfection — they need presence. This season, take a moment to check in with yourself: What’s one thing you’re proud of so far? What’s one practice you want to strengthen next semester? How is your community showing up for each other right now?
December 12, 2025 at 7:21 PM
When students learn that there’s more than one way to see, think, or do something, they gain a deeper understanding of themselves and one another. Subjectivity helps classrooms shift from “right vs. wrong” to relativity, perspective, and meaning - try it in your classroom today! #classroomtips

What is Cultural & Linguistic Responsiveness?

Dr. Hollie breaks it down the CLR way through movement, voice, and community.

CLR isn’t theory — it’s practice. It’s engagement. It’s a willingness to step in, participate, and grow. #culturallyresponsive #community #teachingmatters

What does your community feel like when it’s engaged?

Is it loud with laughter and conversation? Quiet with focus and connection? Or a mix of both?
Take a moment to reflect on what authentic engagement feels like — and what creates it.

When we can name it, we can nurture it.

Realness: How truth and authenticity are communicated to others can be culturally based.

In some cultures, directness is considered polite and expected, while in others, indirectness is more appropriate. In school culture, being direct is typically not preferred.
