Either way evidently when you live in the ocean and swim freely as if flying boundaries tend to be a bit more…fluid. I know in the Ingo Books the mer don’t have names for oceans like we do so to them it’s all just ingo and they all share the same ocean

But if it makes you happy I came up with a song of Achilles x Percy Jackson merman au on insta where Achilles, Percy and others r sons of Poseidon and different partners (Ancient Greek style) and they’ve either earned places as sea/marine life protectors or Poseidon had them with other sea rulers

As for why the princesses…why is it in Waterfire Saga Merrow surveyed the seas to establish territory for the mer? Or why is it only Merrow’s daughters and their daughters and their daughters and so on can be Regina of Miromara? (Read the series and you’ll find out)

Sea monsters and merfolk likely be coming and going as they please through the seas provided they keep the peace which a mermaid protector and a sea monster representative ensure. And that’s protector not ruler. The princesses r likely just security guards or other for the seas

Considering swimming and living in the vast ocean means merfolk and sea monsters wouldn’t necessarily have the exact same boundaries we have on land, just like naturally flying allows Maleficent’s dark fey to not have those rigid kinds of land boundaries despite coming from different environments…

And funny enough turns out against the treaty terms and Triton’s wishes Ariel’s eldest sister Mala fell in love with and married her half-serpent half-barracuda sea monster co-worker. Like eldest, like youngest lol

Ok I looked into the Against the Tide book and turns out WAY before Triton or Ariel were born merpeople and sea monsters formed a treaty which established the seven seas and that each sea would have a royal merperson protector and resident sea monster keeping the peace and settling disputes
