Look at the address on Streetview. It’s as low density as possible. It can sustain the additional population, plus it is as close to UVic, which needs more housing alternatives than the unaffordable, poorly maintained rental homes in that area and the current neighbourhood are frankly boring.

Halibut House in the Saanich Core makes this tofu and veggie black bean stir-fry on rice for a fresh lunch option Tuesday-Sunday.

Their dinner menu is vegan-friendly and they will even make some off-menu favourites like mapo tofu. Just ask!

Vegan tacos on the Sunshine Coast last month. This were from a spot called Aquí Es Mexico in a tiny strip mall in Madeira Park. Lacking protein and smaller portions but 10/10 on flavour.

Community Food Support is desperately seeking more Back-End Volunteers to keep the program alive.

We deliver 80+ free food hampers to recipients in #YYJ each week from the Quadra Village Community Centre gym, but much takes place behind the scenes beforehand to make that possible.

Back-End Volunteer Roles with Community Food Support

Community Food Support delivers 80+ food hampers to families across Lekwungen territory for free every week. This work cannot be done without the work of our incredible back-end volunteers!

Many of our back-end volunteers are over capacity and we need to onboard new volunteers to be able to continue the food delivery program.

If you support our mission or have been considering volunteering, now is the time to help us out!

What does being a Back-End volunteer involve?

There are many different roles. Each role has multiple people on a team so that no one person is taking on all the work, and so folks can take breaks.

These roles are independently completed on your own time, usually online with Slack and email.

Back-end volunteers attend two organizing meetings online per month (Monday evenings), if they are available, or read the minutes and report back in Slack.

No prior experience with Slack is required - we will train you!

Meeting Coordinators

Responsibilities:
* Create meeting agenda
* Facilitate bi-weekly meetings
* Create Google Meets for meeting and post meeting reminders on Slack
* Take notes during the meetings and share them in Slack

Time-Commitment:
* 0.5 hour/bi-weekly
* An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings

Accessibility Info/Experience:
* Is an online role (computer needed), with potential for in-person summer meetings
* Requires use of Slack and email
* Requires availability briefly on Sunday and for an hour every other Monday eve
* Requires taking initiative, but others are always happy to provide direction

* Record all expenses and manage donations
* Answer finance inquiries
* Update with account balance or valuable information in Slack channel monthly

Time-Commitment:
* 1 hour/week
* An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings

* Is an online role (computer needed)
* Requires use of Slack and email
* Requires comfort with finances
* Requires confidentiality

Volunteer Coordinators (Sorting, Drivers, Pick-Up, Shopping)

Responsibilities:
* Send monthly volunteer emails/post to Slack
* Ensures all in-person volunteer roles are full each week
* Send reminder emails to volunteers, monitor volunteers@ email to see if anyone cancels, reaches out to find replacements
* Liaises with social media team to post about volunteer vacancies

Time-Commitment:
* 2-3 hours/week
* An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings

Accessibility Info/Experience:
* Is an online role (computer needed)
* Requires use of Slack and email

Time Sensitive Volunteer Coordinators

Responsibilities:
* Monitors volunteers@ email for last minute cancellations from volunteers and finds replacements by email, Slack, or social media
* Works with social media person or directly posts to Instagram to find replacement volunteers

Time-Commitment:
* 1-2 hours a week (mostly on Slack, Email and Instagram)
* An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings

Accessibility Info/Experience:
* Is an online role (computer needed)
* Requires use of Slack, email and social media
* Requires availability Sunday and Monday eve and crucially Tuesday morning
* Requires taking initiative, but others are always happy to provide direction

Social Media team

Responsibilities:
* Checking social media and responding to messages
* Posting updates, volunteer requests, and important information
* Create graphics for posts using Canva

Time-Commitment:
* 1 hour/week
* An additional 2 hours a month at online meetings

Accessibility Info/Experience:
* Is an online role (computer needed)
* Requires use of Slack, email and social media
* Requires use of Canva
* Requires taking initiative, but others are always happy to provide direction

That is lovely! They seem very nice the times I have been in plus the matcha is great. I wish more businesses here felt this way but the world seems to be pushing big chains, acquisitions and making it harder for independent operators to make a living.

People over 60 with good values also welcome! Last week a guy named Terry blamed a stationary bike curb barrier on Gorge Rd for causing traffic delays and not the driver who crashed into it. They seem to think that the desire of alternate transit is some big conspiracy.

The local Victoria Nextdoor community is insular and overrun with bike and pedestrian-hating retirees, it is basically an alternate reality. If you are under 60 and have the fortitude, please make an account on that app and stick up for bike lanes and walkability.

Is it plastic? “Plant derived materials” doesn’t mean it isn’t mixed with synthetics. I would suggest that we simply don’t need an alternative to feathers if it can’t be 100% plant based.
