The production of silk dates back thousands of years. The process begins with silkworms. At around 6 weeks, each worm spins a cocoon producing 1 strand. The threads are then extracted, washed, dyed and spun. Here we can see silk making in Japan: prov.vic.gov.au/search_journ...
