For the morning crowd…
Really proud of this one. If you’re not tired of reviews and essays on del Toro’s Frankenstein, I humbly ask you to check out my take.

This is a damn good film. Honestly, I think one of the year’s best.
Frankenstein (2025)
It says a lot about my admiration for director Guillermo del Toro that I was eagerly anticipating watching his take on Frankenstein. It’s a story that’s been done to death, after all. There are so …

Casper
In 1995, it was impossible to escape the marketing buzz for Casper. It was a film aimed squarely at kids, starring a character that adults remembered from their own childhood. Long before the days of weaponized nostalgia, the filmmakers behind Casper had found a way to appeal to a wide swath of audiences and deliver a family-friendly film that all ages could enjoy. I didn’t see a ton of movies in the theater as a kid, and at the age of 8, I wasn’t eagerly anticipating Casper. I was a pretty wimpy kid, and ghosts weren’t something I gravitated toward. Needless to say, I didn’t see the film. In fact, I don’t know that I ever gave the film much thought again until this year. As my wife and I hunted for age-appropriate spooky movies to show our 4-year-old daughter, we stumbled upon the fact that Casper was celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Having never seen it, but remembering the omnipresent marketing from my childhood, I was intrigued at the idea of watching it for the first time alongside my daughter.

Watched Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow for the first time recently, and really enjoyed it! Wasn’t quite what I expected, but I had a lot of fun with it. Has any film better encapsulated the fall season? My review:
Sleepy Hollow
When I was a little kid, I was fascinated with the legend of Sleepy Hollow. As I’m sure many of my contemporaries did, I first learned about it from the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” segment of the Dis…

Seeing lots of outrage that the Dems caved, but it’s worth noting that federal employees are people too. We’ve been beaten up all year. My wife was illegally laid off on April 1. I’ve been without a paycheck for 41 days.

I have a family to provide for. Places aren’t giving us a break. We need help.

📽️ With this, I’ve now published 50 movie reviews on my website. Feeling very proud!
Karate Kid: Legends
For a long time, I was fairly unfamiliar with The Karate Kid franchise. I’d seen bits and pieces of the first two films at some point in my childhood, but they clearly didn’t grab my attentio…

Tonight feels like a big deal. Haven’t felt that in a while. At least not in the right direction.

I am reading Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing for the first time ever, and this absolutely rips. Forty years old and still a prime example of stunning storytelling.

I get that comics are serious business, but stuff like DC x Sonic the Hedgehog are the epitome of what comic books are meant to be.

📽️ Finally got a chance to watch Superman, and was so disappointed. I really wanted to like it. I thought the actors were phenomenal, but sadly, I did not care for the story or the wild tonal shifts. Not sure Gunn was the right choice to direct this.

Anyway, I wrote WAY too much about this movie.
Superman (2025)
Growing up, I probably knew more about Superman than the average kid. Not that I was big into him, or even DC Comics in general. I was a Spider-Man kid through and through. Rather, Superman was my …

In no world will I pay $60 for a fucking book I read 20 years ago, much less a brand-new book. This price gouging is ABSURD.

I love when I watch a movie and it turns out to be not what I expected, and then I have to stew in my thoughts and figure out how I feel.

Anyway, just watched James Gunn’s Superman. 😳

📽️ Maybe the least necessary movie review ever. If you’re a Demon Slayer fan, you’re already locked in. If you’ve never seen it, you would never start the series with this film.

And yet, this movie RULES. It’s a stunning triumph of animation, and offers a glimpse into the future of the medium.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle
I have a deep appreciation for Japanese anime, even though I’ve only seen a handful of series. Growing up on a steady diet of Disney films and Nickelodeon cartoons, I was raised to believe that car…

📽️ Finally got a chance to watch The Blackening (it’s on Netflix), and what a fun film to kick off the Halloween season! Not scary at all, but deeply funny. Anyone who enjoys satire that breaks down horror tropes will find a lot to enjoy with this.
The Blackening
Almost from the start, I knew I was going to like The Blackening. I love when films take risks and bend genres, and a horror comedy is maybe one of the hardest combinations to pull off. After all, …

Twenty years ago this fall, I walked into a used bookstore and bought damn near every @stephenking.bsky.social book they had. I was going to read them all, and then life got in the way.

Instead of reading as a college student, I read it this week as my daughter turned 4. This WRECKED me.

📽️ Friendship brings to life the inexorable spiral into insanity that we’re probably all one bad day from experiencing. A deeply weird film, and not without its faults, but one that really fires on all cylinders when it works. It spoke to me in ways I really didn’t expect. More in my review.

📽️ I expected to be let down, but the live-action Lilo & Stitch was very entertaining! It does deviate from the original film a lot, which can be a mixed bag, but it’s overall a great reimagining of an animated classic.

I’m slowly getting back into reading comics, and decided to dive into ULTRAMEGA. The first volume is incredible! Such an intriguing premise, and bonkers artwork.

Then, it totally shits the bed in its second (and final) volume. What the hell happened?!
